Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 153

Chapter 153

So she chose Amber.

Luna Amber might get angry, yes. Disappointed too. But Amber was still softer in ways Joseph was not. More likely to hear first and

cut later. More likely to protect before punishing. Ashley clung to that possibility as she knocked on the bedroom door.

To her surprise, it was Levi who answered.

He stood there filling the doorway, hands folded, shoulders set in a way that immediately made Ashley feel like she was intruding on something private. He was not smiling. Not welcoming. Just there, solid and guarded, like a man who had already decided nobody

would enter that room casually.

The protective stance caught her attention first.

Not because it was dramatic, but because it told her something at once. Amber was not well. Levi would not be standing like that for no reason. Ashley’s pulse kicked harder.

“What do you want, Ashley?”

His voice sounded bored, but there was still something firm under it. A warning almost. Ashley swallowed and tried to make her

own voice smaller, gentler.

“I want to see Luna Amber.”

Levi glanced back over his shoulder toward where Amber sat, and only then did Ashley realise he would not let her in unless Amber herself agreed. That small detail unnerved her too. He was guarding the room. Guarding his wife.

“It’s Ashley,” he said to Amber.

Amber told him to let her in, and Levi stepped aside, though not warmly.

Ashley walked into the bedroom feeling strange. The room was dimly lit, quiet in a way that immediately felt wrong. Not peaceful. Sick. The air itself seemed tired. She saw Amber sitting on the couch and knew, without needing anyone to say it aloud, that the Luna was unwell. It showed in the way she held herself. In the faint weakness in her posture. In the stillness around her that did not look like rest so much as recovery.

Ashley’s fear shifted direction at once.

For a moment Cynthia disappeared from her mind completely. Joseph disappeared too. All she saw was Amber looking diminished in a way Ashley had never seen before, and the sight genuinely shook her. Whatever Ashley’s flaws, whatever selfishness lived in her, she did care about Amber. Maybe not purely. Maybe not cleanly. But enough.

She rushed to Amber and held her without thinking.

Chapter 153

“Luna, are you alright?”

Amber nodded gently. Even that movement looked faintly draining.

“Doctor Rosenberg has given me medication. I was okay for a bit, but I just need to rest.”

Amber’s tone was calm, almost too calm, and that irritated Ashley on her behalf. Rest? Just rest? She looked ill enough that Ashley’s worry rose immediately into anger, and before she thought it through, she turned on Levi.

“Why haven’t you taken her to the hospital?”

The sharpness in her own voice surprised her. It surprised her enough that she nearly regretted it the second the words left her mouth. She did not know where the courage came from. Maybe it was not courage. Maybe it was panic piling on top of panic untit spilled out as accusation. Either way, Levi did not appreciate it.

“Watch your tone with me, little girl. Even your boyfriend cannot speak to me in that tone. Amber is my wife, so you do not expect

me to be negligent.”

His annoyance came through clearly. Ashley went still under it. Levi was not shouting, but that almost made it worse. There was no chaos in him. Just offense and authority. The kind that made a person feel foolish for overstepping.

He was not wrong either.
