Chapter 141
Ethan kept looking at Meadow while that word echoed around his mind. Mate. Not as comfort. Not as habit. Not as general pack language. The meaning of it sat differently. He did not want to leap into assumptions. He was not a fool. His human side could not confirm that kind of thing. Only Echo could. Only his wolf would know for sure. Still, the thought lodged itself deep. Was it possible? Was it possible Meadow was his fated mate?
He said nothing. Not yet. It was too soon. Too uncertain. And the last thing he wanted was to build false hope around something sacred. So he swallowed it and held it close instead.
Then another thought came.
He would do his session.
A little while earlier he had not been able to go through with it. He had been too shaken, too distracted by what Camila uncovered about Meadow. But now? Now faith had come back into him suddenly and strongly. Camila had done something real. She had helped Meadow crack through a barrier that had stood for years. Maybe she could help him too. Maybe not with something spectacular, maybe not in the same way, but enough to move the ground beneath him.
It was evening by then, but he did not care.
He wanted the session. He wanted answers. He wanted movement. He wanted to know if there was any path back to Echo.
By then Keith and Elaine had returned from shopping, so Ethan linked Keith and told him to call Camila back for his session. After that he looked again at Meadow, who still seemed half-lost in what had just happened.
He studied her more closely now.
Nightshade might not be an ordinary wolf.
The suspicion had been in him before, faint and half-formed, but it sharpened now. Her eyes were unusual. Her speed was unnatural. Her fighting instinct had always been beyond what he expected. And now she had broken through an Alpha’s command and linked him. Meadow’s wolf was not normal. Ethan did not know what that meant yet, and because he did not know, he kept it to himself. There was already too much happening. Too many possibilities. He did not want to pile more onto Meadow before anything
was certain.
“I have sent for Camila to carry out my session. I would like you to observe it and tell me everything.”
She nodded.
He shook his head.
“Henceforth, you link me to respond. The sign language is good, but I would prefer to hear your voice in my mind.”
Meadow smiled at him then, shy and warm and still damp with tears.

Chapter 141
“Yes, Ethan.”
The way his name sounded in his head nearly undid him.
It was soft but clear. Gentle, but with a sweetness that slipped right under his skin. Soothing and alluring at the same time. Ethan
stared at her for a second too long, his chest tightening in a wholly different way now.
“You are lucky Camila is on her way.”
He teased her because if he did not, he might have dragged her into him and forgotten all about the session. Meadow laughed, and the soundless shape of it mixed with the mental warmth of her amusement, and that somehow made it worse.
Camila arrived not long after and was taken to their bedroom in the cabin. She knocked. Ethan told her to enter. He was eager now in a way that had not been there earlier, and even before she stepped in he was already thinking of how to tell her what had
happened.
Camila entered carefully, almost cautiously. Ethan noticed. He suspected she did not want to say or do anything that might set him off. He did not care enough to comment on it. Let her be careful. That was better than carelessness.
She looked around the room as she came in. Ethan saw her eyes take in the modifications that had clearly been done with Meadow in mind. Her gaze lingered for a second on the picture above the bed, the one of him and Meadow. Something softened in her face at that. Maybe she saw what everybody else saw. Maybe she saw how happy Meadow made him. Maybe she saw the peace that had entered his life with his wife in it. Ethan did not know. He only knew that he had no interest in hiding his feelings for Meadow from
anyone.
“Please have a seat, Camila.”
He sounded excited, even to himself. Camila looked faintly surprised by that. He did not blame her. A few hours ago he had been in
no state for any of this.
“I called you here for my session. My wife will observe.”
He did not smile, but his mood had changed enough that his tone gave him away. Camila sat, still trying to read him.
“Nightshade linked me, and now Meadow can link me.”
That got the reaction he expected. Camila turned to Meadow in clear surprise. She had not thought they would achieve so much on the first day. That much showed plainly in her eyes.
“That is good news.”
It sounded genuine. Relieved too. Maybe because it meant she had not failed him. Maybe because it really was a breakthrough worth
celebrating.
“It means Meadow has broken through a barrier. Gradually we will see how we can get her voice back. This is a huge improvement.”

Chapter 141
Ethan nodded, then immediately came back to the part he cared about most.
“She also can’t remember the two significant incidents that caused her condition. I think you should focus on finding it out so I can
deal with the culprit.”
The annoyance in his voice was hard to hide. Camila heard it too. She did not answer with promises. Probably because she knew promises like that could be dangerous if they failed. So she simply nodded and took the instruction.
Then it was time.
