By the time Sarah woke up, she had already been rescued and brought home by George's mother—Mira's grandmother from the Finn village.
Of course, George's mother hadn't saved her entirely out of the goodness of her heart. Back then, every family in the mountain village struggled to put food on the table, and rations were worth their weight in gold.
Once Sarah had regained a little strength, George's mother asked if she would be willing to marry her son.
Seeing that George was a young, able-bodied man, Sarah realized he was a massive upgrade from the old bachelor. He seemed decent and honest, or at the very least, he didn't look like the type to beat her for no reason.
Besides, Sarah had nowhere else to go. She knew that if she kept running, she would end up starving to death.
So, she agreed.
"Mom, did your father ever try to find you after that?" Mira asked.
"I'm sure he did. The whole village probably went looking for me. But I was one step ahead of them, and they never caught me."
"What about now? Are they still around?"
"With the way alcohol was rotting his body, he's probably been dead for years."
"That's a relief. Well, if anyone ever asks about your background in the future, just keep doing what you've always done—say nothing."
...
Meanwhile, Owen Lance had arranged a meeting with Sebastian Quinn and his daughter...
Because Mira had skipped a grade in this lifetime, Seraphina Quinn was still in her senior year of high school. When she heard Owen had invited them out, she was over the moon.
Meeting at the entrance of the restaurant, Seraphina, dressed in a pristine white sundress, immediately rushed up to cling to Owen's arm. "Owen, I missed you so much."
Owen instinctively sidestepped her. He was a germaphobe—he had been in his past life, and he still was now.
However, Seraphina calling him affectionately wasn't entirely out of bounds. Owen was Sebastian's foster son, and she had grown up treating him like family.
