The moment Mira walked through the front door after school, Adrian's furious voice echoed through the foyer.
"Stand right there and don't move!"
Mira blinked in mild confusion, her gaze shifting toward the living room sofa. Mara was curled up in Lacey's arms, hyperventilating through dramatic sobs, while Adrian glared daggers in her direction.
"What's going on? What kind of stunt is Mara pulling now?"
Mira wondered silently, but the words slipped out of her mouth before she could stop them.
Adrian looked like he was about to blow a gasket. Just as he opened his mouth to scream, Ethan came jogging down the stairs, having heard the commotion.
"Mira, what's wrong?"
"I have no idea," Mira replied coolly. "I just walked in, and Adrian started yelling at me. I asked him what stunt Mara pulled this time, and he refused to answer."
It was true. Mira still hadn't formally acknowledged Adrian and Lacey as her parents. Did they really think just anyone was qualified to hold that title?
As for his yelling, it didn't intimidate her in the slightest. In her past life, she had grown up under this roof and never feared them. In this timeline, they had lost her the moment she was born; she owed them even less.
Hearing her blunt assessment, Ethan's lips twitched in amusement. He turned his attention to the three people on the couch. "Mira asked you a question. What's the latest drama?"
In the background, a few of the maids were visibly struggling to suppress their laughter.
*Smack!* A deafening crack echoed through the room as Adrian slammed his palm against the coffee table, nearly shattering the glass. "Ethan, you're doing this on purpose! Are you seriously telling me you don't know what happened at their school today?"
"Of course I know. The entire population of Melvion City knows. How could I not? You're talking about Mara getting caught cheating on her midterms, buying the answer key off her homeroom teacher a day in advance, right?
It's an absolute disgrace. It's already dragging the Mercer Group's reputation through the mud.
But what does any of that have to do with Mira?"
He paused for a beat, feigning an epiphany. "Oh, I get it. You've finally decided to discipline Mara."
