"Mira suffered for years while you lived a life of luxury in this house," Ethan glared at Mara. "Now that she's finally back, instead of showing a shred of compassion, you act disgusted by her?"
"Alright, that's enough. Mara just spoke without thinking. She didn't mean it like that."
Lacey quickly intervened, desperate to protect her precious darling from any scolding.
But with that pathetic attempt to smooth things over, it was clear that in this lifetime, Lacey still wasn't fit to be a real mother to Mira.
Lacey turned back to Mira. "After dinner, I'll take you shopping for some clothes."
With that, she guided Mara toward the inner rooms.
As they passed the dining table, Mara suddenly gasped. "Ah! White truffles! You're eating my Alba white truffles!"
Her voice pitched into a shrill shriek. "And my Brittany blue lobsters! How dare you? How could you? And my premium goose barnacles!"
Usually, whenever the house received rare ingredients in small quantities, they were strictly reserved for Mara.
Realizing this, Mara snapped her head toward the kitchen. "Who cooked this? Who did this? Don't you know these are reserved just for me?"
Rachel stayed silent, but Tessa cowered and stammered, "It... It was Ethan. He ordered us to prepare the most expensive ingredients we had..."
"So what? Mira was missing for seventeen years. She's finally home. What's wrong with her eating a decent meal?"
Ethan demanded, his dark gaze locking onto Mara. "You enjoyed seventeen years of luxury while she suffered. She eats something expensive on her first day back and you lose your mind?
Selfish brat!"
He spat the last words through clenched teeth.
"Ethan, enough."
Lacey scolded.
She then turned her attention to soothing Mara. "It's fine, sweetheart. Once they're done, I'll buy you some more."
"But... but those are incredibly hard to source! You can't just buy them even if you have the money!"
Mara wailed, tears streaming down her face.
