The barrage of questions was overwhelming, but the mention of Lawrence broke Seraphina completely. She let out a gut-wrenching wail and sobbed uncontrollably.
Gwen was momentarily stunned, but maternal instinct took over. She rushed to the bed, pulling her daughter into a desperate embrace. "Sweetheart, please, don't cry. You're still recovering. Crying like this will ruin your health..."
But Seraphina's grief was a shattered dam. The tears poured out endlessly, impossible to stop.
Gwen could only sit there, gently rubbing her daughter's back until the violent sobs eventually reduced to exhausted hiccups.
"Seraphina, stop crying," Gwen urged softly. "Your health is the most important thing. If you destroy your body now, you're the one who will suffer later.
Don't worry. I swear to you, I will make that old hag pay for what she did to you and the baby."
Seraphina blinked through her tears, thoroughly confused. What did her mother mean? She was the one who had attempted to poison Eleanor.
Had her mother completely misunderstood the situation?
She opened her mouth to explain, but Gwen cut her off. "Rest, sweetheart. You just gave birth. Your recovery comes first.
I know everything. I understand perfectly. Leave the vengeance to me."
Seraphina immediately assumed Gwen had discovered the truth about Lawrence and was plotting to murder Owen. Panic surged through her fragile body. "Mom, you can't! Don't do anything reckless. They are too powerful. You won't get revenge; you'll only destroy yourself!"
She had seen firsthand what happened to her husband and mother-in-law. They hadn't managed to hurt Owen at all—Lawrence was dead, and Jocelyn was completely broken.
"Relax, Seraphina," Gwen said with a dismissive wave. "Even if I can't take down the big players, you think I can't handle one frail old woman?"
Seraphina's panic shifted to profound confusion.
"Mom, who exactly are you going after?"
"Who else? The old hag."
Silas Vane and Jax Weaver trailed discreetly behind them. Since they were inside the highly secure private community, the threat level was minimal.
After the two bodyguards thoroughly swept the perimeter and confirmed it was clear, Mira waved them off. "You two can take a break. No need to hover."
With Mira's formidable combat skills, she was more than capable of neutralizing any standard threat herself.
The tranquility was shattered instantly. A sharp rock hurtled out of the bushes, aimed directly at the bench. With lightning reflexes, Mira's hand shot out, snatching the jagged stone from mid-air.
If she hadn't moved, it would have struck Eleanor squarely in the temple.
Initially assuming it was a prank by a reckless neighborhood kid, Mira tracked the trajectory of the throw. Her predatory gaze locked onto a woman lurking suspiciously behind the foliage.
"Stop right there!"
