Mid-sentence, Gwen realized she had revealed too much and abruptly clamped her mouth shut.
The driver blinked, quickly piecing things together. "Ma'am, Eleanor isn't staying at the Quinn estate. She moved into her granddaughter's house."
"She left? Good. Why didn't you say so earlier? You had me stressed over nothing."
The driver mentally rolled his eyes. Who knew mentioning the elderly woman would trigger such a psycho reaction?
"Who managed to kick her out?"
"I believe it was Seraphina..."
The driver wanted to add that Seraphina had actually tried to poison the old woman, which was the real reason she left, but he knew better than to agitate the lunatic in the back seat. He bit his tongue.
"Seraphina kicked her out? My daughter is incredible. She takes right after me,"
Gwen boasted, practically glowing with pride.
"How are Seraphina and the baby? How is my son-in-law?"
The driver tensed, his hands gripping the steering wheel tighter. After a long agonizing pause, he stammered, "I... I don't know..."
"God, why are you so useless? You're like a brick wall!"
Gwen glared at him. "How do you not know how your own employers are doing?"
The driver's mind raced. "Well, Seraphina is married now. They all live at the Lance estate. I'm just a driver for the Quinns, so it's normal that I don't get updates."
"They're at the Lance estate? Does that mean my son-in-law is back?
Did he pressure Miles into releasing me?"
Before the driver could formulate a response, Gwen answered her own question. "That has to be it.
My son-in-law is so capable. I always knew he was the right choice. My judgment is flawless."
The driver was speechless. He honestly didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
He decided to just let her live in her delusion—they were almost at the estate anyway. Once he dropped her off, he would make a run for it.
"Is my daughter close to her due date?" Gwen asked suddenly.
"Then why weren't you driving fast before?"
"I was worried you'd get into a fight with Eleanor if we got back too soon. If you titans clash, a small fry like me gets caught in the crossfire."
"And why are you speeding up now?"
The driver thought quickly. "Because I realized that a highly educated professor like yourself would never stoop to the level of bickering with an old woman."
He desperately tried to flatter her ego.
"Exactly. How could that old fossil ever compare to me?"
Gwen preened, the compliment hitting exactly the right spot.
"I need you to do something for me."
"What is it?"
The driver's defenses instantly went back up.
