"She just ran off? Without a divorce?"
Mira's eyes widened.
Jax narrowed his eyes and continued, "Master Ellis reported it to the authorities and filed for divorce. That's why she hasn't dared to return for years.
He pursued her relentlessly, even sending men overseas to track her down and get his revenge."
"Did they find her?" Mira asked.
"No. At least, not before we left.
Knowing his temper back then—young and ruthless—if he had found her, she would have ended up dead or crippled.
She knew it, too, which is why she stayed hidden.
Later on, she got scared. Or maybe life abroad wasn't as glamorous as she thought, and she regretted it.
She sent multiple intermediaries to negotiate, offering to return part of the assets if he dropped the charges. She even said she'd be willing to come back to him.
But there was no way he'd agree to that."
"What about the boy? She didn't offer to send him back?" Rachel asked.
"He was her human shield. As long as she had him, Master Ellis would hesitate. That's exactly why she refused to send him back.
All those years later, his anger cooled, and his business recovered. For whatever reason—maybe he just lost interest—he dropped the case.
But that betrayal cut him deep. He hasn't been with a woman since."
Just then, Mira heard the sound of the front door unlocking...
Her door had a keypad, but the family used the fingerprint scanner.
It was Master Ellis.
Everyone jolted, quickly greeting him. Guilt flushed through the room, prompting even the usually reserved Silas and Jax to offer him a smiling hello.
"What were you just saying about dropping a case?"
Jordan glanced at Owen. "Were you listening in on this, too?"
"Owen wasn't listening. He was working upstairs and just came down to get me."
Mira quickly covered for Owen, which was mostly true anyway.
Jordan then turned his piercing stare back to Jax and Silas. "Stop feeding the younger generation your nonsense. If I catch you gossiping about this again, you'll regret it."
It was getting late. Mira had promised to only waste half an hour, but an hour and a half had already slipped by. If Jordan hadn't returned, she probably would have kept digging for details.
Owen hadn't rushed her, mostly because he had wanted to hear the story, too.
"Let's go. We need to get to work; it's going to be a long night."
Owen said with a resigned sigh.
Before heading upstairs, Mira turned to Jordan. "We need to talk when you have a minute."
