At noon, Stefan's assistant arrived with lunch.
"Are we expecting another parade of relatives?" Winona asked him.
The assistant nodded. "Before Mr. Goddard passed out, he told me to announce he was going on a 'business trip.' He wanted to shield you from having to deal with this exact situation."
Winona took a deep breath. "I know what I'm doing. I can handle it."
Stefan had previously briefed her on the key players in the Goddard and Shepherd families. The most dangerous were his second uncle and aunt, but they were currently out of the country, so they likely wouldn't be an issue this time.
In the afternoon, Violet and Roxana came to visit.
With the Goddard matriarch present, any other lingering relatives were swiftly blocked at the door, finally giving Winona some peace.
Roxana sat by the bed, chatting with her.
"I heard you chased Aunt Renie out earlier. That's so badass!" Roxana whispered excitedly.
"Is Violet going to be upset that I was so rude to her?" Winona asked.
"Not at all," Roxana replied. "Grandma doesn't like the second or third branches of the family."
The second son was adopted, while the eldest and the third were biological. It seemed strange that Violet would dislike her own biological third son's family.
Seeing Winona's confusion, Roxana explained. "Honestly, Grandma used to adore my third uncle, Orion. But one specific incident completely froze her heart toward them."
Winona listened intently.
Lowering her voice, Roxana said, "I was only five or six. The wing where my grandparents lived caught fire. Uncle Orion wanted to run in and save them, but Aunt Renie physically held him back. In the end, it was my dad who ran into the flames and carried them out.
"My dad spent half a year in the hospital recovering. And what did they do? They spent that entire time lobbying the board of directors, trying to steal my dad's position in the company. My grandpa was so furious he almost disowned them. They still live on the main estate, but Grandma absolutely despises them."
Winona felt a chill run down her spine. For some people, money and power were worth more than the lives of their own parents and siblings.
Two days later, Stefan finally opened his eyes.
Seeing Winona sitting vigil by his bed, he gave a weak, helpless smile.
