Winona didn't stick around for the overpriced coffee. Once she finished discussing the project details, she headed straight back to her lab.
She worked relentlessly until 1:00 PM, grabbed two takeout boxes from a nearby deli, and hurried back to the hospital.
Stefan had slept through the morning and was now sitting up, looking significantly better, typing away on his laptop.
Winona set the food down on the overbed table. "Have you eaten?"
"I had something earlier," Stefan nodded. "You haven't eaten yet? Sit down and eat. Lexie dropped off two full meals a while ago; you can have those too."
Winona wasn't nearly hungry enough for all that. She finished one of her deli sandwiches and shoved the rest into the mini-fridge.
"I'm feeling completely fine now," Stefan told her, closing his laptop. "I'll have them run some blood work this afternoon, and if everything is clear, I'm discharging myself."
Winona knew he was an absolute workaholic. If he wasn't physically confined to a hospital bed, he would push himself until he collapsed.
She crossed her arms, her tone leaving zero room for debate. "You are staying overnight for observation. Fevers spike unexpectedly, and if you get worse at home tonight, I will lose my mind with worry."
Knowing she was already stressed juggling her project and taking care of him, Stefan immediately caved. "Alright. I'll stay."
Standing in the corner, Lexie watched the exchange with sheer disbelief.
She had worked for the Goddard family for years. She knew perfectly well how ruthless and stubborn Mr. Goddard was. The man lived for work. Even his grandmother couldn't convince him to take a day off.
But the second Winona said the word, he folded without a fight. It was crystal clear who really held the power in this relationship.
Winona stepped out into the hallway to take a work call and unexpectedly ran into Yulen Locke and Tallulah Shipley.
Tallulah was in a hospital gown, slumped in a wheelchair, glaring daggers at Winona.
The Locke Group's flagship project, the HSV-121 drug, had just hit a catastrophic wall. Tanner Yates, the lead researcher, had essentially gone on strike to extort them for more money. Tallulah, unable to manage the crisis or secure the funds, had stressed herself into a hospital bed with threatened miscarriage symptoms.
Yulen had rushed to the hospital upon hearing the news, only to find himself face-to-face with Winona.
