Ryder looked down at his wife, his eyes overflowing with tender relief.
Though Wynne was finally awake, she was still deeply groggy and disoriented.
A nurse stepped in and gently shooed the crowd. "The patient needs absolute rest right now. Please step outside so she can recover in peace."
Stefan had originally planned to drop the bombshell about Winona and Wynne's relationship right then and there, but seeing Wynne's fragile state, he decided to hold off.
Everyone except Ryder filed out into the sterile hallway.
Sylvan Scully immediately locked eyes on Winona, letting out a cold, derisive sneer. "You drove Ophelia and her mother apart, forcing her to flee to the capital, and you still have the nerve to show your face here?"
Winona crossed her arms, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Ophelia set me up. The fact that I didn't press charges and let her rot in a cell is practically an act of charity. Besides, Wynne is a deeply reasonable woman—unlike you, who clearly wouldn't know the truth if it slapped you in the face."
Sylvan's face flushed a violent crimson. "You insolent little brat!"
Yulen, terrified that Winona was going to permanently alienate the powerful CEO, quickly intervened. "Winona, watch how you speak to Mr. Scully. He's not entirely wrong. Ophelia left Riverton because of you. When Wynne realizes she's gone, it's going to break her heart."
Winona let out a sharp laugh. "Let me get this straight. I'm the victim here, yet I'm standing in a hospital hallway being lectured by the two of you? Absolutely pathetic."
Yulen scowled, convinced she was becoming more irrational and difficult by the day.
Stefan took a protective step forward, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Mr. Scully. Yulen. I am the one who forced Ophelia Powell out of this city. Winona had nothing to do with it. I highly suggest both of you learn to speak to her with some goddamn respect."
Both men bristled, a sour taste coating their mouths as Stefan openly shielded her.
Sylvan was furious on Ophelia's behalf.
Yulen was just suffocating on his own jealousy.
Refusing to waste another second on them, Winona turned on her heel and walked away, Stefan right beside her.
Once they were safely enclosed in the quiet luxury of Stefan's car, Winona let out an exasperated groan. "Sylvan Scully is completely unhinged. It's no wonder Wynne wanted nothing to do with him!"
Stefan gripped the steering wheel, a sudden thought giving him pause. Winona wasn't just Wynne's daughter; she was Sylvan's daughter, too.
She might eventually open her heart to Wynne, but could she ever accept Sylvan?
