Margaret heard from the maid that Stefan had arrived. With a cold scoff, she walked into the living room.

She looked at Stefan sitting on the sofa and spoke with a sarcastic edge. "Such a busy man, and yet you found the time to visit me?"

Stefan knew his mother had refused to return to the Capital simply because she wanted to keep meddling in his relationship with Winona.

He cut straight to the chase. "Did you order Prudence to swap Winona's medication?"

Margaret looked genuinely bewildered. Being falsely accused made a suffocating anger rise in her chest.

"Why on earth would I do something like that? Stefan, do not throw baseless accusations at your own mother!"

Stefan knew his mother well. She was the type who, if she actually did something wrong, would self-righteously demand your understanding and forgiveness. It seemed she really wasn't the one who bought off Prudence.

If that was the case, there was no point wasting his breath here.

He stood up to leave.

"Stop right there!" Margaret shouted, furious. "You accuse me and then just walk away? Do you have any respect for me as your mother?"

Stefan didn't even turn around. His voice was ice. "Given your track record, it's no surprise you were my first suspect."

Margaret trembled with rage. "Is there absolutely no trust left between us?"

"You destroyed my trust with your own two hands. If anything happens to Winona, you will always be my first suspect."

With that, Stefan strode out the door.

Margaret screamed in frustration and smashed a teacup against the wall. It was all Winona's fault, driving this wedge between them!

Winona had Ezra Vane bring Prudence to the house.

Prudence looked entirely remorseful, but for the sake of her son's schooling, she resolved to protect Ophelia. The worst-case scenario was taking the fall herself and doing some jail time.

Seeing that Prudence was refusing to speak, Winona leaned back slightly. "Prudence, I read your son's file. If you go to jail, there will be no one left to discipline him. I guarantee it won't be long before he's expelled again for causing trouble. And once he hits the streets and causes real damage, it won't be a simple school matter anymore. He'll likely end up behind bars right alongside you."

The thought of her delinquent son struck a chord of sheer terror in Prudence. Her husband had left her for another woman, and she worked gruelingly as a housekeeper just to raise the boy. Yet, he was nothing but rebellious. She was already at her wit's end.
