Walking toward the parking lot, Tallulah spotted a tiny, pristine white Maltese tumbling straight into a decorative fountain.
Normally, she wouldn’t bother playing the good Samaritan. But then she noticed the collar—it featured a custom Gilded & Co. tag. She had seen it in a luxury magazine; that tiny piece of metal alone cost over three million. A dog wearing something like that had to belong to someone exceptionally wealthy.
Lately, she had been hitting dead ends trying to secure business projects. If she could use this to network with the owner, it might solve all her problems.
Without hesitation, she scooped the shivering dog out of the water and wrapped it securely in her own designer jacket.
A gasp echoed from nearby.
Tallulah turned to see an elegantly dressed older woman hurrying over, flanked by two maids. The panic on the maids' faces melted into intense relief the moment they saw the beloved pet was safe. One rushed forward, profusely thanking Tallulah as she reached for the dog.
Seeing that the older woman hadn't bothered to step forward and thank her personally, Tallulah felt a sting of disappointment. Still, maintaining her polished smile, she handed the dog over. "He choked on some water. It would be best to get him checked by a vet."
The maid nodded fervently, thanked her again, and brought the dog back to her employer.
Glenda Shepherd had come to Riverton specifically for her daughter. She had already been in a foul mood, and losing Snowy had only made it worse. Now that her precious dog was safe, her icy expression thawed slightly.
"Give that young lady my card," Glenda instructed her maid. "Tell her if she ever needs a favor, she can come find me."
The maid promptly handed the embossed business card to Tallulah.
Glenda Shepherd.
Tallulah’s heart practically hammered out of her chest as she stared at the name. This was the matriarch of the Shepherd family from the Capital. Stefan Goddard’s maternal grandmother!
She had just rescued the most important dog in the city.
However, ever since Evander’s death, Margaret had let her emotions dictate her life, botching countless opportunities. It drove Glenda insane. She had repeatedly ordered Margaret to seize all the power and resources of the Goddard Group to funnel back to the Shepherds, but Margaret had accomplished absolutely nothing.
Seeing her mother, Margaret broke down in tears. "Mom... about Evander... was I really wrong?"
She desperately wanted her mother's comfort.
Instead, Glenda looked at her with pure disgust and delivered a harsh slap to her arm. "Margaret, you are a daughter of the Shepherd family and the matriarch of the Goddards. How can you hide in here crying like a coward?"
From childhood, whenever Margaret showed the slightest hint of weakness, she was violently reprimanded. Conditioned by decades of fear, the moment Glenda scolded her, Margaret instinctively sat up straight and apologized.
"I'm sorry, Mother."
Glenda sneered. "Have you still not finalized Stefan and Ophelia’s marriage? Our family needs the Powells' shipping lines to expand, but they refuse to let us in on the deal. If the marriage happens, we become family, and the contract is practically guaranteed. It’s been so long, and you still haven't handled it? He’s your son. You expect me to believe you can't make him listen?"
