In under half an hour, Lexie had prepared two hearty, balanced plates and pressed fresh juice.
Winona looked down at the pan-seared chicken breast, steamed fish, and sautéed greens. It smelled incredible.
"Thank you so much," Winona said.
Lexie smiled warmly. "Don't mention it! If you like my cooking, you should come over and eat at Mr. Goddard's every night."
"Oh, I couldn't impose like that."
Lexie looked confused. "Aren't you two dating? Why would it be an imposition? Mr. Goddard even called to specifically remind me that you prefer lighter meals in the evening so I shouldn't make anything too heavy. Otherwise, I would have cooked up a real feast for you to try."
Winona's face flushed hot.
Technically, since the hospital incident where she agreed to give them a try and he made his intentions perfectly clear, the barrier between them had been broken. Calling them boyfriend and girlfriend wasn't inaccurate.
But they hadn't really gone on any formal dates or spent much time together as a real couple yet, so the label still made her feel incredibly shy.
Seeing how beautiful, gentle, and elegant Winona was, Lexie internally applauded her boss. Mr. Goddard truly had top-tier taste. Only an angel like her was fit for him.
Thrilled that Winona cleared her plate, Lexie quickly gathered the dishes and silverware and took them to the kitchen.
Winona offered to help, but Lexie laughed it off. "Please, don't lift a finger. I get paid entirely too much just to do this little bit of work. Let me earn my keep!"
Winona had no choice but to retreat to the living room to play with Biscuit.
Once the dishes were done, Lexie brought out a platter of sliced fruit. Just then, the front door clicked open, and Stefan walked in.
"Welcome back, Mr. Goddard," Lexie greeted him. "Let me heat up your plate."
Stefan nodded, shrugging off his suit jacket as he walked straight toward Winona.
Winona was busy scratching Biscuit behind the ears. Seeing Stefan approaching, she instinctively leaned back.
"Stefan."
He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead.
Winona froze entirely. The heat rushed to her cheeks, the tips of her ears, and straight down her neck.
Stefan reached out, gently brushing his thumb against her earlobe. She shivered.
"I've been wanting to kiss you all day," his voice was a low, velvet murmur. "Can we start with the forehead?"
Hypnotized by the sheer proximity of his striking face, Winona unconsciously nodded.
"Then it's settled. No backing away when I touch you."
By the time Stefan closed his laptop, it was half past eleven.
He took off his glasses, rubbing the bridge of his nose. Realizing the living room was dead silent, he walked over.
Seeing Winona curled up fast asleep on his couch, his gaze softened dramatically. Biscuit trotted over, gently nudging Stefan's slipper.
Stefan smiled, pressing a finger to his lips. "Shh."
He carefully scooped Winona up in his arms and carried her into the guest bedroom.
At seven o'clock the next morning, Winona blinked awake, completely disoriented to find herself in Stefan's guest room.
She scrambled out of bed, found the slippers left for her, and walked out.
Stefan was at the stove, flawlessly flipping an egg. It looked like a scene straight out of a magazine. Hearing her footsteps, he turned.
"There are fresh clothes in the closet and a bathroom attached to the room. You can shower and come out for breakfast."
Winona shifted awkwardly. "That's okay, I don't want to intrude. I'll just go wash up at my place."
It was literally right across the hall.
Stefan crossed the kitchen, his eyes entirely focused on her. "You can do whatever you want in my home. Stop worrying about intruding."
