Violet pointed an accusing finger at Margaret. "If Ophelia and Maeve end up at each other's throats, the resulting scandal won't just ruin them—the Powells and the Mallorys will blame *us*. You'll be starting a blood feud! You need to cut ties completely and force both women to move on. And as for picking a wife for my grandson? I have infinitely better taste than you ever will. You'd be smart to stay out of it."
"Mom, why do you never believe in me?" Margaret cried, feeling completely ganged up on.
Violet let out a dry, hacking laugh. "Because of your lifelong track record of idiocy? What exactly have you done to earn my trust? When I picked Freda Aston to marry my son, she was ten times smarter than you. At least she never made catastrophic errors in judgment!"
At the mention of her husband's ex-wife, Margaret saw red. Freda Aston had always been the thorn in her side. Even though Freda had left the Capital years ago, high society still constantly compared them.
Freda hadn't just survived her divorce; she had thrived, becoming a wildly successful businesswoman. To make matters worse, Freda had remarried into the prestigious Stockton family, where she was universally respected and ran her household with an iron fist. Margaret, on the other hand, was still constantly belittled by her mother-in-law.
Violet sneered, twisting the knife. "Forget career success—you can't even manage your children's love lives properly. Freda is already a grandmother, enjoying her life! And you? You're actively sabotaging your own son! Stefan and Winona falling apart is entirely your fault!"
Realizing that her entire family was united against her, Margaret's eyes welled with furious tears. Everything she did was for her children! For the legacy of the Goddard family! Why did they always treat her like the villain?
"We clearly have nothing more to say to each other," Violet declared, waving her hand dismissively. "Stefan, Roxana, stay for dinner. You, leave."
She was kicking her out in front of the housekeeper and her own children. She wasn't even allowing her a plate of food at the table.
Margaret's face turned a mottled shade of puce. She had never been so humiliated in her life. Unable to bear another second of the old woman's insults, she spun on her heel and stormed out.
Silence finally returned to the Goddard Manor.
The Goddard family was facing external threats from corporate rivals, yet her son and daughter-in-law were too incompetent to realize it. If it weren't for Stefan holding the empire together, the Goddard Group would have been swallowed whole years ago. The stress of their stupidity was giving Violet more gray hairs by the day.
Roxana giggled, her youthful optimism shining through. "Well, I can't wait to watch the drama unfold!" In her mind, her parents bickered constantly but were completely devoted to each other. They'd survive a little sabotage.
Stefan calmly served Violet a bowl of soup. "Eat up, Grandma. You'll need your strength to deal with Dad."
His father had been coasting on Stefan's hard work for far too long. It was time the old man took some friendly fire for his son.
Violet puffed out her chest. "Don't you worry about me! I've still got plenty of fight left in me. I'll make sure they don't have a moment to breathe!"
