Family Can Be the Enemy
HANNAH’S POV:
“Where is he?” she whispered suddenly, glancing toward the hallway. “Elijah… is he… is he-?”
“Don’t you dare say his name,” I snapped at her and she smiled smugly at me for a second.
Her gaze flickered back to me, cold and venomuus new. “He was never yours, Hannah. You left him. You made him weak. You-”
Before she could finish, the door swung open again and in walked Mr. and Mrs. Martinez. Everyone froze watching them as they walked in.
Mrs. Martinez looked pale, her hair pulled back, her pearl earrings gleaming under the fluorescent light. Mr. Martinez had his usual stern, emotionless expression, though his eyes darted anxiously from one face to another.
“What’s going on here?” he demanded. “We came as soon as we heard. What happened?”
Silence stretched thick and tense. No one spoke until Lucas stepped forward. They didn’t know him, neither had he even ever had the chance to speak with them before.
He ran a hand through his hair, his voice shaking with anger. “What happened? Your favorite woman tried to kill Hannah. And Elijah stepped in the way of the bullet.”
I was so glad that everyone believed me without a doubt and it’s probably because they could already tell how Janet was. I would never call her my sister again.
I could hear Mrs Martinez gasp, appalled and it was then I noticed my parents also walk in and my dad questioned Lucas saying, “That is a heavy accusation, Janet is Hannah’s sister.”
He reminded and Lucas looked at him with a look that screamed, “Duhh…obviously.” But just as he was about to speak, I glanced at Mrs Martinez.
Mrs. Martinez blinked rapidly, her lips parting. “That’s… that’s not possible.” She turned toward Janet, disbelief and horror twisting her features. “Janet… tell me that’s not true.”
Janet began to sob again, shaking her head furiously. “No! I didn’t do it! They’re lying to you! Hannah is just trying to point fingered at another person and what better way than to victimize me, who loves Elijah the most in the whole-”
Lucas cut her off, his voice sharp as steel. “She had a gun. A gun. At a family amusement park. She aimed it right at Hannah. You are really believing the words of this psychopath.”
“Don’t you dare speak about my daughter like that, child. She said she didn’t do it, so she didn’t. We all know Hannah is fond of lying.” My mother defended her and I couldn’t help but scoff.
Stupid of me to assume anything good come from my mother!
We all turned instantly. A doctor stood by the doorway, his scrubs stained, his eyes weary but calm.
“Yes,” I breathed, stepping forward so fast I nearly stumbled. “That’s us.”
He nodded slowly, removing his mask. “He’s out of surgery. The bullet missed any vital organs. He lost quite a lot of blood, but he’s stable now.”
The air left my lungs in a rush of relief. My knees almost gave out as Lucas caught me by the shoulders, his voice thick. “He’s okay,” he whispered. “He’s okay,”
Behind us, I heard Mrs. Martinez quietly begin to sob. Mr. Martinez exhaled deeply, muttering something under his breath that sounded like a prayer.
And Janet, Janet just stood there, pale and trembling, her tears finally real this time. Because even she could see it now.
Though she also denied it, everyone could see underneath all her lies were truth.
I had nothing but disgust as I stared at my parents…I don’t even think I should call them my parents. They are just enablers of Janet’s bad behavior.
