The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 441

MARY'S POV:

It felt as though the solid floor beneath my feet was slowly dissolving away into nothing, making every single breath of air heavier, colder, and far more painful to pull into my lungs. The high walls of the room seemed to close in around my body, the surrounding air growing thick, heavy, and completely suffocating. I could feel the terrible weight of her tearful gaze pressing against my heart, along with the unsaid question hanging quietly in her eyes. I could feel the suffocating pressure of her silent hope, her desperate, heartbroken need for this terrible mess to somehow work out smoothly, so that her family could remain whole.

Did Beatrice genuinely want me to give up my freedom and agree to this terrible contract too?

The heartbreaking thought pierced straight through my chest like a sharp iron blade. This was the exact same woman who had been far more of a real mother to me over the years than my own late biological mother had ever bothered to be. The type woman who had held my cold hand through the terrifying hours of labor, who had stayed awake by my side through endless sleepless nights, and who had repeatedly told me I was strong whenever I felt like completely breaking apart. This was the same mother who had bravely defended me against her own son earlier, hitting him with her handbag and choosing to stand by my side over her own blood.

And now, here she was, looking straight into my eyes with those desperate, pleading eyes, and the painful truth hit me all at once. I knew right then and there that Alistair had won this battle. He had successfully tracked down the single emotional weakness in the world that could break my spirit completely. He had found the one person in this house I could never bring myself to hurt or disappoint.

I simply could not bring myself to open my mouth and say anything cruel against Beatrice. Deep down in my heart, I understood perfectly well that Alistair had deliberately set up this whole emotional trap to manipulate her good nature. He had deliberately used her religious faith, her endless kindness, and her deep love for innocent children against her. He had twisted her sweet compassion into a sharp weapon to cut me down. However, understanding his cheap psychological manipulation did not make the sharp pain inside my chest go away. Knowing how he did it did not stop my heart from breaking into a thousand tiny pieces.
