His Cruel Bargain
MARY’S POV:
The huge house looked completely unchanged when the car finally pulled up to the front entrance. It was the exact same house where I had cried myself to sleep night after night. The same house where I had first discovered his disgusting betrayal. The same house where I had been locked out in the cold, locked inside rooms and completely hidden away from the world. The same awful place where I had been treated like a paid servant, and like an inconvenient person who did not matter at all.
I opened the front door and stepped inside and just as I had anticipated, Alistair was sitting right there waiting for my arrival.
He was sitting comfortably on the dark sofa in the living room, his long legs crossed, holding a low glass of dark whiskey in his right hand. The amber liquid caught the dim light, swirling gently around the glass as his hand moved. He looked up the exact second I stepped into the room, his dark eyes sweeping over my body from head to toe, carefully assessing my mood. He did not bother to smile at me. He did not stand up from his seat. He simply sat there watching me walk closer, looking like a quiet predator waiting for its helpless prey.
A thick paper agreement was resting flat on the wooden coffee table right in front of his legs.
He reached out his hand and pushed the document toward my side of the table. “Sign your name on it.”
I walked a few steps closer, my eyes scanning the printed words at the top of the white page. The black text seemed to swim right before my eyes, blurring and sharpening under the dim lighting of the room. “Open- Marriage Agreement.”
It was exact to the letter, just as Marl had predicted back at the apartment.
However, when my eyes read down to the actual terms….
