The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 94

Raised by Enablers

HANNAH’S POV:

A FEW HOURS LATER:

It was currently five hours after Elijah was rushed to the hospital and there was still word from any of the medical personnels. The clock on the waiting room wall ticked in agonizing slowness, every second stretching into eternity. I sat slumped on the cold bench, blood drying on my hands and shirt, my thoughts looping the same horrifying images again and again, Janet’s voice in that costume, the gun, Elijah stepping in front of me, the sound of the shot. The waiting area was a mess of whispers, footsteps, and prayers. The nurses moved back and forth, their faces polite but closed. No updates. No reassurance. Nothing.

Everyone had come in, Jacob flew in after his game still in his uniform, Martin and Lucas had been the first to arrive, as well as Maya who had been trying to get me to eat something and also take the twins home but they wouldn’t leave my side.

I had to plead with them as my heart was breaking thinking about how they had to witness all of this, “Baby, you have to go home now. Elijah is going to be fine.”

I always tried to shield them from the dangers and horrors of this word because at the end of the day, they were still my babies but I guess I couldn’t ever do that.

With tears in Amelia’s eyes, she asked, “You promise Daddy’s going to be okay?”

I almost burst into tears when she said that and I nodded saying in a high pitched tone, “Yes! I promise.”

It was as they left after hugging Andrew tightly that I realized that Amelia had called him ‘Daddy’, if…when… Elijah wakes up and hears it, his heart would be so full and he would smile so big. 1

I embraced Maya tightly and muttered an appreciation to her, “Thank you, I will keep you updated.”

She nodded and said, “And you should eat something, I will be back with fresh clothes.”

She was truly a God sent friend.

Just as she was leaving, Cherry was walking in her uniform and she embraced me tightly making me about to break into tears, “I just landed, any update?”

I shook my head and she let out a deep sigh, and I noticed she and Jacob made eye contact.

Martin sat across from me, head in his hands, muttering prayers under his breath even though they weren’t that close, that was his brother at the end of the day. Lucas stood by the window, arms crossed tightly, his eyes red- rimmed and distant.

“Are you for real?” I snapped, rising to my feet, my entire body shaking. “You pointed a gun at me, Janet! You aimed it at me in front of my children!”

Her lip trembled and she frowned deeply, but there was something calculated behind her eyes. “Why would I do that? I heard you were attacked and Elijah got attacked, so I ran here to check up on him because despite everything you’ve taken everything from me, Hannah. Like my relationship, my reputation, my-”

“Stop pretending it’s glaring you did it!” Lucas cut in sharply, stepping closer, fury etched into every line of his face. “You came to an amusement park armed! You waited until she was alone with her kids! You committed a premeditated crime and you are trying to act like you didn’t!”

Tears spilled from Janet’s eyes then, but I’d known her long enough to recognize the act. Her voice cracked in all the right places as she whispered, “I don’t know what Hannah has told you but I wasn’t the one who shot at them, I don’t have a gun and never held one.”

Jacob broke free of Martin’s hold and took a step forward again, his fists clenched. “You’re a crazy, you are really crazy!”

Cherry quickly moved between them, her arms out. “Stop it, both of you. This isn’t the time nor place.”

I was barely breathing. My nails dug into my palms as I glared at Janet, every fiber of me wanting to scream, to grab her, to make her understand what she’d done and maybe even remind her what she had done.
