The True Heiress: Legend Mode novel Chapter 38

Miles knew his boss would never truly mistake anyone else for her, but in a life-or-death situation, he wasn't willing to risk even a fraction of a percent of a chance. Even if it just vaguely looked like her, he was going to throw himself in the line of fire.

.

After the brief surgery to remove the bullet, Chuck was transferred to a private suite. Luckily, it was just a clean through-and-through shot to the upper arm. Nothing vital was hit.

Juno stood at the foot of his bed, totally still, just staring at him.

Lying back against the pillows, Chuck wisely kept his mouth shut.

The attending physician popped in, gave a few standard postoperative instructions, and quickly excused himself.

"Look at you," she said, her flawless face completely devoid of sympathy. "You never used to be this pathetic."

Back in the day, he could walk through a warzone without a spot of dust on his suit. Now, he was taking stray bullets in shopping malls.

His pale lips twitched. "It was a trick of the light."

"Once the bullet wound heals, you should schedule an eye exam."

Morgan had stationed his security team down the corridor, while Miles stood guard right outside the door.

"Tell your boss to stay the hell away from her," Morgan muttered.

"That's way above my paygrade," Miles shot back instantly.

Morgan didn't say another word, and Miles remained silent. They couldn't stand each other anyway.

If it weren't for her, Morgan wouldn't have wasted a single second standing outside this room.

Click, clack, click.

Both men looked up at the sound of frantic high heels racing down the corridor. It was Janet.

Morgan gave a subtle flick of his wrist.

Before anyone could even blink, two of Morgan's massive bodyguards materialized in front of her, forming an impenetrable wall.
