As he finished speaking, Ethan instinctively clenched his fist, his heart in his throat.
Although he knew Director Hawkins and Callahan were close, he didn't know how close. Would the Director be willing to wade into the murky waters of the Langley Group's internal affairs for Callahan's sake?
...
At the Sherwood estate, the dining room was brightly lit but felt isolating and vast.
At one end of the massive, European-style dining table that could seat over a dozen people, a solitary figure sat.
But Tamara Sloan didn't look lonely or pitiful in the slightest.
The cool glow of her phone screen illuminated a face twisting with uncontrollable excitement.
Tamara's finger scrolled down the screen, but her eyes remained glued to the bold black headline.
"Langley Group CEO Callahan Langley confirmed dead in Northern Myanor explosion. Fiancée Leilani Sloan missing, presumed dead."
At first, Tamara thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. But after reading it multiple times, the reality set in.
The Langley Group only had one heir, and his name was Callahan Langley. It couldn't be anyone else.
The corners of Tamara's mouth twitched as if she was trying to suppress something. But the memory of Callahan humiliating her to defend Leilani quickly erased any restraint.
The suppression turned into pure, unadulterated release. A massive, twisted grin stretched across her face, completely impossible to hide.
"Callahan is dead?"
She slammed her phone face down on the tablecloth, grabbed her silverware, and began to devour the exquisite but lukewarm dishes in front of her like a ravenous beast.
For the past few months, severe morning sickness had made Tamara's life a living hell. She threw up everything she ate, and her once-plump cheeks had hollowed out.
But today, the spectacular "good news" acted like a shot of adrenaline, leaving her feeling emptier and hungrier than she had in months. She practically inhaled her food, wolfing down three small bowls of rice and demolishing most of the dishes on the table, yet she still felt like she had room for more.
Standing to the side, the maid, Lila, watched in stunned silence. What was going on with the young missus? She had been deathly ill just a few days ago. Why was she suddenly eating like she was starving?
Binge eating like this couldn't be good for the baby. Remembering Fitch's orders to monitor Tamara's health closely, Lila cautiously stepped forward.
"M-Ma'am, please slow down. Don't choke," Lila urged softly. "You're eating for two now. You have to prioritize your health..."
Only then did Tamara snap out of her euphoric trance.
