On the other end of the line, the Director sounded clearly skeptical, his voice filtering through the receiver with a hint of static.
"Ethan? Are you absolutely certain this explosion is connected to our backlogged cases?"
"And you know perfectly well what the situation is like in Northern Myanor. It's overrun by warlords and criminals. It's a completely lawless, incredibly dangerous zone!"
"International investigations aren't as simple as you think. They require layers of approval from higher-ups. We can't just barge in because we want to."
Director Hawkins seemed to remember something, pausing before asking, "Does your sudden interest in crossing the border have anything to do with that childhood friend of yours?"
"What was her name again?"
Hawkins remembered the last time Callahan had asked for a favor regarding his little cousin; Ethan had practically jumped at the case.
Did Ethan have some kind of relationship with Callahan's fiancée?
Hawkins was good friends with Callahan, and seeing the news of his death had shocked him too. If it were possible, Hawkins would also love for Ethan to investigate and find out the truth.
"Director..."
How did the Director know about Leilani?
And how did he know about their connection?
"Director, how long has the rot in Northern Myanor plagued our city's police force? Based on my analysis and my gut feeling, I already have indirect evidence suggesting that this seemingly random, targeted bombing was likely orchestrated by that mysterious kingpin we've been hunting for years."
The kingpin Ethan was referring to was the notorious drug lord and head of the Maengka Tribe in Northern Myanor.
The man was pure evil, yet no one knew his true identity or what he looked like. But his shadow loomed over countless transnational crimes.
Leilani's composed face flashed in his mind again. His detective's intuition told him this was not a simple accident.
"Director, this is a breakthrough we can't afford to miss. It's a chance to tear their entire dark web apart. It might be the absolute best—and last—chance we have to bring them to justice. If we let this slide, crucial evidence and people will vanish into that lawless void forever. Please, approve my request!"
"Director, I know Mr. Langley is a good friend of yours. With Langley Group and you backing us, as long as you give me your approval in principle, I swear I'll handle this flawlessly."
