Audrey wanted to fight back, but she didn't dare.
This man held all the power. If she completely tore away her facade now, she would lose everything.
"Todd!" Adrian ignored her tears.
Todd stepped forward. "Boss."
"Take her back!"
Todd hesitated. "And you, sir?"
"I'm taking Jo to the hospital."
"Understood."
Todd walked over to Audrey. "Mrs. Lowell, let's go."
Audrey clenched her fists, her nails biting into her palms, standing rooted to the spot.
Todd tried to coax her. "Mrs. Lowell, Mr. Lowell specifically ordered us not to call the police. You were in the wrong here. You should..."
Smack!
Audrey unleashed all her pent-up rage, slapping Todd hard across the face.
She couldn't hit Adrian, but she could damn well hit his lapdog.
"Who the hell are you to lecture me?" she shrieked.
Todd was stunned by the sudden blow. He sucked in a sharp breath, fury surging in his chest.
Adrian might have been moody and unpredictable, but at least he had never resorted to physical violence against him. This woman actually dared to strike him!
It was outrageous.
But Audrey was still Adrian's woman. No matter how furious Todd was, he didn't dare lash out. He swallowed his pride, grinding his teeth together.
"My apologies, Mrs. Lowell. I spoke out of turn."
Adrian pushed Todd aside, his eyes completely devoid of warmth. "Todd is my man. Are you hitting him just to make a point to me?"
Audrey wiped the tear tracks from her face, looking at him with utter desolation. "You can hit me in front of outsiders, but I can't even discipline a lowly assistant?"
Adrian opened his mouth to reply but ultimately decided against it.
A faint smile touched Adrian's lips. "Am I not allowed to speak the truth?"
Jocelyn countered, "Wouldn't marrying a man who genuinely treats her well be a hundred times better than staying with you?"
"Do I treat her poorly?"
Jocelyn let out a dry laugh. "You used to say that exact phrase to me all the time."
If providing basic food and shelter counted as treating someone well, then sure, he was a saint.
"Adrian, do you even know what a woman truly wants from a man?"
Adrian didn't seem to care much, missing the point entirely.
"Love and understanding. Things no one will ever get from Adrian Lowell."
"Even knowing she won't get that, Audrey still wants to be with you. Why do you think that is?"
Adrian already knew the answer. He just couldn't bring himself to say it.
Jocelyn said it for him. "Because she's actually fallen in love with you."
