The kidnapper immediately noticed Adrian's complete shock.
"Hah, your ex-wife is pregnant with your kid, and you didn't even know?"
It took Adrian several agonizing seconds to process the words. He stared at Jocelyn, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
"You're... pregnant?"
Jocelyn was trapped.
Admitting it felt like a mistake.
Denying it was pointless.
The kidnapper's agitation was spiraling completely out of control.
He dragged Jocelyn dangerously close to the sheer drop.
The razor-sharp blade carved another shallow line across her throat.
Jocelyn couldn't afford to care about the stinging pain anymore.
She had to survive.
"I will pay for your daughter's medical treatment."
The man froze instantly.
"What did you say?"
"I said, I will pay for your daughter's treatment."
"Are you serious?"
"I'm completely serious. I have the money. I will save her."
"I don't believe you! I don't believe you! You're lying to me! Rich people are all scum!"
Jocelyn forced herself not to look down into the terrifying abyss behind her. She poured every ounce of willpower into keeping her voice perfectly steady.
Staring death in the face, a cold terror finally began to seep into her veins.
"I'm about to become a mother myself. I understand what you're going through. Think about it—if you walk away tonight, you'll go to prison for a few years, but you will get out. You'll be reunited with your daughter."
"But if you die tonight, your little girl will be entirely alone in the world. She will die. That is not what you want."
"You only did this to get money for her surgeries, right? Let me pay for her treatment. You serve your time and turn your life around. Isn't that the best outcome?"
He was a desperate criminal, but he wasn't a monster.
Her words were dismantling his resolve.
Jocelyn let out a shuddering breath of relief.
"I swear it. And I'll bring your daughter to visit you."
At the exact same moment, she managed to slip her wrists free from the loosened ropes.
Thanks to the heavy shadows, the kidnapper didn't notice.
Adrian was standing too far away to hear their exchange.
But seeing the man slowly lower the blade, a massive weight lifted off his chest.
Suddenly, Todd—who had been waiting for the perfect opening—launched himself forward like a bullet.
The moment he sprinted out of the shadows, Jocelyn felt a jolt of sheer horror.
Even with a knife pressed to her throat while dangling over the edge of a lethal drop, she hadn't felt panic like this.
Todd was moving incredibly fast.
He wanted to take the kidnapper down.
His intentions were pure.
But he entirely overlooked one fatal detail: right now, the kidnapper was a live wire who couldn't handle any sudden aggression.
