The moment the words left her mouth, Sarah regretted them.
Now everything was out in the open. She couldn't hide it anymore.
She tried to backpedal frantically. "No, wait, what wedding? I misspoke, I meant..."
"Sarah."
Jocelyn forced her chaotic thoughts into alignment, maintaining absolute clarity.
"You're a terrible liar. And... I'm not that easy to fool."
Sarah offered a bitter smile.
"I know you're smart. So smart that I sometimes envy you. I always thought you were God's favorite. Not only are you gorgeous, but you're brilliant. Whatever you do, you do it flawlessly. Even when it comes to things you aren't familiar with, you pick them up in an instant..."
"You're wrong. I am no one's favorite. If I were, I wouldn't have ended up living the life I did in the Evans family."
A wave of bitter sorrow washed over Jocelyn's heart.
"If I were favored by fate, I wouldn't have finally found my biological mother only to lose her immediately."
"If I were favored by fate, I wouldn't still be in the dark about whether my biological father is dead or alive."
"If I were favored by fate, I wouldn't have suffered three years of misery and humiliation in the Lowell household."
Sarah's chest tightened. "I'm sorry."
Jocelyn offered a faint, melancholy smile.
"We're just like you—ordinary people. Maybe I shine a little brighter in a specific field, but that doesn't mean you aren't outstanding in your own right."
"So, Sarah, don't envy me. I should be the one envying you."
"A happy family, doting parents, the freedom to live exactly how you want. I really do envy that."
They stared at each other for a long moment, emotions swirling heavily between them.
She remembered it clearly. Liam had tried to extort fifty thousand dollars from her, and she had refused. But Julian had traded a luxury sports car to Liam just to get the necklace back.
Jocelyn had thought it was bizarre at the time. Why would Julian trade a sports car for a simple piece of jewelry?
Now she finally understood.
"The reason Julian traded a sports car to Liam was because Liam knew the secret behind that necklace. Julian was paying for his silence."
"The jasmine pendant corresponds to the 'Jo' in your name. He designed it himself and had it custom-made to give you as a wedding present."
"Unfortunately, Claire Lowell stole it on the day of the wedding, so you never even saw it. We only found out by pure luck when we saw it around Claire's neck the day we went shopping."
Jocelyn remembered it vividly. No wonder they had been so fiercely fixated on Claire's necklace that day.
"Liam had his people snatch the necklace right back. I have to hand it to that guy," Sarah admitted, momentarily forgetting her current feud with Liam. "I actually respect how he handles things. Quick, ruthless, and no loose ends."
Jocelyn completely agreed. That was exactly why she had chosen to partner with Liam all those years ago. He always put on a playful, nonchalant front, but he handled crucial matters seamlessly and invisibly. That was his greatest strength.
