The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 611

Mia Hayes had a point.

While Cynthia Hayes didn't completely lack affection for her brother, it certainly wasn't a deep bond. Previously, when he had asked for a place to stay, she had casually tossed him a few hundred thousand dollars. In her eyes, she had already been more than generous.

Since Mia had given him the money, he needed to take it and figure out his own life. If he was too greedy to do that, it wasn't their responsibility to keep financially babysitting a grown man. At her core, Cynthia was a pragmatist. If her brother had any real use to her, she wouldn't have minded spending money to solidify their sibling bond. But since he was nothing more than a leech who only cared about living comfortably, she was done. Why should she claw her way to the top just so he could reap the benefits in the background?

The world simply didn't work that way.

"Alright, I know what I'm doing," Cynthia said smoothly. "Just leave this to me. You focus on your part of the plan. That is the ultimate guarantee for the rest of our lives."

"Of course, Mom. Just trust me, there won't be any issues."

Pleased by her daughter's confidence, Cynthia transferred another sum of money into Mia's account.

"Spend it wisely."

Mia beamed as she watched her bank balance skyrocket. "I will! Thanks, Mom!"

Cynthia smiled and patted her back, the picture of maternal warmth.

...

"Nora!"

The moment Nora Hayes stepped off the elevator, she was engulfed in a massive hug by Valerie Cruz and Julia Ryland.

"You're finally here! We've been waiting forever. We honestly thought you were going to cancel today," Valerie babbled, pulling back to inspect Nora from head to toe. Her bright smile was laced with relief. "Thank God you're okay."

Julia, always more reserved than Valerie, offered a warm, gentle smile. "Let's head upstairs," she said, naturally taking the lead.

Nora glanced over her shoulder to see Nathan Peyton following silently behind them. She opened her mouth to speak, but Valerie beat her to it.
