His gaze turned somber, his tone heavy. "If that's true, we have a massive problem."

Nora stood up and paced across the room.

"You just said the stalker used this man's life to get my attention."

She stopped dead in her tracks, whipping around to look at Nathan. "Is it possible I actually know this person!"

"They're lurking right beside me, eager to watch me suffer, but terrified I might figure out who they are."

"They're chasing the thrill of the hunt. Watching me struggle and panic is exactly what gets them off."

"But they're conflicted. Half of them wants to be caught, while the other half is absolutely horrified by the idea."

Nathan gasped slightly at the chilling theory.

Even though her logic was flawless.

Hearing it out loud still sent a shiver down his spine.

But monsters like that absolutely existed in the real world.

In all his years as a detective, he had put countless criminals behind bars.

Nathan nodded. "I have."

"And that one was completely unintentional."

She washed some fruit for the two of them, looking eager for a story.

He didn't beat around the bush, diving right in. "I handled a few cases like that back in the Arvendale Region."

"In one of them, two vendors were selling fish side by side. One day, a fish jumped out of Vendor A's tank and landed near Vendor B's. Vendor B was busy and didn't realize it, so he just picked it up and tossed it into his own tank. Vendor A lost his mind and poisoned Vendor B's tank that night. Coincidentally, Vendor B's son wanted fish for dinner, so Vendor B grabbed a few fish from his tank to take home. The entire family died of poisoning."

"We caught Vendor A afterward. During the interrogation, he claimed he only wanted to ruin Vendor B's business as revenge."
