The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 554

The police clearly hadn't found any leads either.

Security footage was easy to review. If the culprit had shown their face, the police would have already brought printed screenshots to ask if they recognized the person.

Working in law enforcement, both of them knew the drill intimately.

The lack of questioning meant the police had yet to uncover any information on the real mastermind.

"Don't worry."

Seeing her grim expression, Nathan reached out and held her hand.

Feeling her icy fingertips, he wrapped her hand in his warm grip, a faint smile on his lips. "A fox always shows its tail eventually. As long as we're careful, we'll catch them."

Not wanting to add to his worries while he was injured, she nodded. "You're right."

"What did the doctor say?"

Noticing her lingering listlessness, he teased deliberately, "You're only asking about me now?"

She paused, realizing she really hadn't asked about his condition the moment she walked in. Guilt flashed across her face. "I'm sorry... I completely forgot..."

He had just wanted to lighten the mood; he hadn't expected her to take it so seriously.

He coughed lightly and pulled her closer. "I was just joking. Don't feel guilty."

"Besides, I didn't get to finish my sentence."

Her attention was caught. "What were you trying to say?"

He smirked. "I meant to say, are you only asking now? If you waited any longer, my wounds would have already healed."

Nora was speechless.

She knew he rarely ever said anything serious.

But hearing him joke about his own injuries left her feeling equal parts exasperated and amused.

"Oh, please. The doctor suspected a fracture earlier. How could it heal that fast? You're definitely lying."

He immediately grabbed her hand and guided it down to his leg.

"They checked, and it wasn't broken. I just pulled a muscle from running too fast. If you don't believe me, feel it yourself. You're a doctor too. I'm sure our brilliant Dr. Hayes can diagnose a minor injury like this."

A man courting a woman would do just about anything, and he didn't think his actions were underhanded at all.

But her reaction was entirely unexpected.

He had assumed she would get flustered.

Or pull away immediately.

Instead, she let her hand rest on his leg and froze in surprise.

Her unfocused gaze clearly indicated she was lost in thought.

Nathan didn't understand.

And his pride took a hit.

Here he was, putting his physical charms on full display to seduce his fiancée.

And she zoned out...

How could this be! Was his physique really not attractive enough for her?
