"Does your fiancé usually drive this car?"
Nora never thought she would find herself sitting in an interrogation room one day.
Especially as the victim.
After a brief moment of daze, she quickly gathered her composure, took a deep breath, and nodded. "Yes."
"Have you noticed anything unusual lately? Receiving threat letters, or feeling like someone is following you when you go out?"
Nora shook her head. "No."
"Did you notice anything wrong before the car crashed?"
She carefully recalled the events.
"No."
The two officers taking notes exchanged a glance and closed their notebooks. "We understand the situation. Rest assured, we'll keep following up on the case and inform you the moment we have any updates."
Nora stood up. "Thank you. Can I leave now?"
"Yes, you can."
Outside the room, the colleagues handling the case asked her, "Dr. Hayes, are you heading straight to the hospital?"
Nora hummed in affirmation.
Since the members of the Special Task Force had already left the station for their time off, the case had been handed over to other officers.
She fully trusted her colleagues' capabilities, so her face showed little anxiety or tension.
The only thing occupying her mind was her concern for Nathan.
"Please give Captain Peyton our best regards, Dr. Hayes. Once we finish investigating the immediate leads, we'll go take his statement."
The priority was to check the dashcam footage and the underground parking lot's security cameras to see if they could find any clues.
Since Nathan had been with Nora, his statement wasn't urgently needed.
"All right, I will."
Nora didn't waste any time. She left the station and took a cab straight to the hospital.
As soon as she walked through the main doors, she ran into Leonard Hayes.
His face was filled with suppressed emotion, looking as though he might burst into tears if she said another harsh word.
Nora couldn't even be bothered to spare him another glance.
She knew he was just putting on a show.
He could fool others all he wanted, but she only hoped he wouldn't end up fooling himself.
For a selfish and self-serving man like him, she didn't believe he was truly capable of repentance.
"I want you to stay away from me." Her tone was ice-cold, completely impenetrable.
A flash of impatience crossed Leonard's eyes.
Afraid she might notice, he quickly lowered his gaze and adjusted his emotions.
"Nora, I'm not trying to annoy you on purpose. It's just that so much has happened lately. I can't just leave you alone."
"How about this? Once your mother is doing better, we find some time to have a proper talk?"
"She and I were married for years, after all. It's not like there are zero feelings left between us."
