The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 472

"There's also a ton of surveillance footage we still need to comb through."

Nathan clearly didn't buy the narrative that they just happened to be the unlucky ones finding human remains on their first date at that restaurant.

But assuming they were specifically targeted didn't make sense either.

It was a buffet, after all.

Whoever planted the remains had no way of knowing which dishes the customers would pick.

Unless this was a random act of terror meant to incite mass panic.

The perpetrator just wanted to disgust as many people as possible.

So there was no specific target.

Yet, if that were true, the restaurant staff should have noticed something off.

A terrorist looking to cause mass hysteria couldn't easily conceal their erratic behavior.

They would have scouted the location beforehand; otherwise, they'd risk getting caught in the act.

"Is Mr. Costello still at the station?"

Nora's heart ached for Nathan, but pulling all-nighters was just part of the job when a big case broke.

Nathan was an adult; if he really hit his breaking point, he would get some rest rather than play the martyr.

Nathan knew his limits better than anyone.

"He's there."

"He's sticking to his story, claiming he has absolutely no idea what happened."

"Says he's just an honest businessman."

Nora scoffed. "The harder he pushes that angle, the more suspicious he looks. Even if he didn't do it, he definitely knows something."

Nathan nodded in agreement. "Exactly."

"We've already subpoenaed his family, but most of them are out of town. We expect them to start arriving at the precinct by tomorrow morning."

Nora gave a soft hum of acknowledgment, her mind racing.

The direction of the investigation was clear.

Those bones didn't just manifest out of thin air.

Wow.

Poor cactus. Didn't know it had been rebranded.

Nora couldn't help but chuckle.

Shaking her head, she unlocked the door and stepped inside.

"Dr. Hayes, you're back?"

A few officers had just returned to the bullpen outside. Nora gave a brief nod, avoiding eye contact as she slipped into Nathan's office.

Thankfully, no one asked why she was letting herself into Nathan's private quarters.

She unfolded the cot and lay down. Just as she was getting comfortable, she heard hushed whispers floating through the door from the officers outside.

"Shh, keep it down. The Captain's fiancée is sleeping in his office. You wake her up, and he'll have our heads."

"Huh?"

"The Captain has a fiancée?"

Nora was speechless.
