He had lived his whole life as an honest, law-abiding citizen. How on earth did something like this happen in his restaurant?
"Officers, there has to be a massive misunderstanding here."
He knew he had to squash this immediately.
If this got pinned on him, his life was over.
He desperately tried to plead his case. "Is it possible you're just mistaken?"
"Those are lamb ribs. How could they possibly be... that?"
He couldn't even bring himself to say the words 'human ribs.'
The mere thought that this was happening under his roof made his skin crawl.
He didn't even want to imagine what would happen to him or his business if this turned out to be real.
No, no, no, this absolutely could not be happening!
"Are you accusing us of framing you?"
This was a heinous crime, and he was currently the prime suspect. Since the police didn't have solid evidence yet, if he just cooperated, the truth would eventually clear his name.
But instead of shutting up, he was frantically trying to argue his way out. The officers' glares sharpened into something deeply hostile.
"I didn't mean that..." He wasn't stupid. He knew the cops wouldn't invent something like this for fun.
He was just terrified of the absolute fallout.
His eyes darted nervously as he turned to one of the officers. "How did you get everyone to leave? Did you tell them there was... that in the food?"
She had been completely focused on sorting the bones, but that comment made her pause and look up at him.
Mr. Costello's eyes went wide. "Wait, this genuinely has nothing to do with me!"
"Officers, you can't just arrest an innocent man!"
The officer grabbing his arm let out a tired sigh. "This was found in your restaurant. You are legally required to come to the station for questioning."
"But—"
"Why are you so afraid to go to the precinct?"
That shut him up instantly.
He clearly realized that fighting back would only make him look guiltier.
He desperately didn't want to go, but he had no choice. He let his head drop in defeat as they dragged him away, a pathetic sight that only made the officers sneer in disgust.
