My heart hammered in my chest, and my lungs felt like they were about to explode, but I knew he needed help.
I swam to him; I was a relatively strong swimmer, so I got to him in no time.
I wrapped my arms around his waist; because his eyes were closed, he didn’t see me, so he had no idea what was going on
He tried to struggle out of my embrace, but I held him even tighter and moved in the direction of the surface.
After a moment, he stopped struggling and allowed me to take him with me.
The moment my head broke through the surface, I took in a huge gulp of air. Warren coughed, spitting out some water in the process. I untangled myself from him, but kept my hands to keep him steady.
“Why would you jump if you didn’t know how to swim?” I asked, shouting over the loud sounds of the waterfall.

“I do know how to swim… I’m just not that strong at swimming. I never really had anyone to teach me growing up,” he muttered. “Plus, I never jumped from a waterfall before.”
He was breathless as he shouted over the sounds of the waterfall. Beads of water dripped down his face; his hair was soaked, and I couldn’t help but laugh at him.
“I can’t believe you jumped,” I tell him, splashing him.
He tried to dodge the splash, but missed, and I got him right in the face. It didn’t take him long to retaliate, He pushed so much water at me that I went under. When I resurfaced, the jerk was laughing. Full-on belly laughing.
“You’ll pay for that one,” I said, splashing him again.
He splashed me right back, and suddenly, we were in the middle of a splash war like a couple of kids. I don’t think I ever laughed this hard in my life. I decided to take it a step further; I wasn’t going to let him win this battle, so I lunged at him.
His eyes widened at the sight of me jumping out of the water and towards him. He caught me with ease, his arms wrapping around my waist, and my legs going around his. He fell backwards into the water, making us both go under, and when we resurfaced, we were both laughing.
“Real mature,” he teased between his fits of laughter.
I remained pressed against his body as we laughed, and then, when the laughter started to die down, I was way too aware of how close we were. My breathing was heavy, my chest rising and falling as I looked up at him. His was heavy too; beads of water drooped off his lashes.
The tension in the air was so thick it could be cut with a knife.
Soon, neither of us was laughing; we weren’t even smiling. We were staring at one another, still wrapped up in one another’s
arms.
Footsteps from around the corner made us both freeze, though.
I quickly spun around to see shadows being cast along the forest grounds, and my heart started to race even more.
Warren suddenly took my hand.
“Come with me,” he said, swimming towards the edge.
I went with him, letting him help me out of the water. We were both soaked; our clothes and hair ruined, with no change of clothes in sight. We had to stay like this until we returned to the palace.
Some voices could be heard, but I wasn’t sure what they were saying.
“Who’s out there?” I whispered for his ears alone.

‘Guards,” Warren replied.

“Come on, let’s go before they spot us,” he said, entwining his fingers with mine and pulling me along with him.
