Chapter 54
Cecilia’s POV
His question caught me off guard
For a moment, I wasn’t sure what to say. I had asked Lora the same thing at one point, but she wasn’t sure at the time. So, I decided to ask her again at this moment.
“Do not know,” Lora replied inside my mind. “I sense mare nearby. But cannot sense beyond that.”
“I cannot sense mate,” Warren said, sounding a bit dejected. “Part of curse perhaps. But Alpha cannot be mated to Omega.”
I swallowed before I met Leopold’s questioning eyes. He was still waiting for me to respond, though my words faltered.
“They… they don’t know,” I said, my cheeks heating. “Warren thinks that maybe it’s part of the curse. Not able to sense his mate.”
“That makes no sense. My true mate is supposed to break the curse,” he said, shaking his head. “Why did he kill all those people?”
The question took me by surprise. I blinked; did he want me to communicate between him and his wolf? When I looked into his eyes, I saw the slight hint of vulnerability. He wasn’t angry anymore… just defeated and maybe confused.
“Please… talk to him for me,” Warren begged, his words echoing in my mind as clear as Lora’s voice. “It’s the only way.”
I let out a breath.
“Okay… then answer his question,” I said out loud to Warren, making Leopold’s brows furrow.
“What?” Leopold asked, but I wasn’t listening to him. I was listening to Warren.
“Dangerous people. They want nothing from him except status and money. They would hurt him to get what they want. Not in best interest of Alpha King.”
I cleared my throat.
“Because those he killed weren’t in your best interest,” I explained. “They were dangerous. Only after money and status. They would hurt you to get what they want.”
He pressed his lips together, letting this information process.
“I’m not an idiot,” he muttered. “I know what they’re after.”
“Your wolf isn’t an idiot either,” I found myself saying.
Leopold was quiet, and then he let out a breath and sat on the edge of the bed. I wondered if he had forgotten that he was still in my bedroom. He wasn’t looking at me anymore; he seemed almost lost, and it tugged at my chest.
“Why can you hear him?” He finally asked, the resolve fading.
“I don’t have that answer,” I replied. “But our wolves get along well.”
King Leopold’s eyes snapped to mine.
“Our wolves have met?”
I nodded, my cheeks heating. Had I said too much?
“They have,” I said, a bit tentatively, gauging his reaction carefully. “Warren had been alone for a long time. He jumped at the opportunity to have a friend finally.”

Leopold stared at me for an impossibly long time; neither of us said anything more. When the tension between us became too much, he stood and ran his fingers through his hair.
“This is what’s going to happen,” he said after a minute. “We are going to keep this a secret. You are going to help me keep my wolf calm because, apparently, he likes you. You’re going to help me communicate with him when I ask, and you’ll continue to be my favored concubine until further notice. Is that understood?”
I swallowed and then nodded my head once.
“Understood,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Good.”
With that, he turned and started towards the bedroom door. He didn’t look back at me as he left the room, and the moment he was gone, I let out the breath I hadn’t known I was holding
“Went well…” Lora said, and I snorted out a laugh.
“Yeah, really well,” I said sarcastically. “But at least he believed me, and now Warren can keep us around for a bit longer. I’d hate to lose my friendship with him, and I know he’d hate to lose us too.”
“It’s good,” Lora agreed.
Later in the afternoon, as I was exploring a bit more of the palace and trying to find the library I heard about, I heard my name being called from a short distance, making my steps falter.
“Cecilia!”
I stopped and turned, only to see Jax jogging towards me. He had a smile on his face, though it wasn’t reaching his eyes. He looked tired, and his hair looked as if he had run his fingers through it a few times too many.
“Hey, Jax,” I said, giving him my best smile in return. “Everything okay?”
“I looked into your mother’s death,” he told me once he was only inches from me.
My eyes widened at his words; the last time we talked, he told me he would look into her death, but I didn’t think he would find out information this soon.
