Chapter 48
Cecilia’s POV
“I can’t believe we almost got found out,” I said, a laugh bubbling out of me before I could stop it.
We had shifted back into our human forms and were returning to the palace.
“I am King. Why does it matter?” Warren asked, grinning as he held open the back door for me.
I walked through, Warren close behind me.
“Because it’s the middle of the night,” I remind him. “The palace would talk if we were seen together at this hour. Leopold would be furious.”
“So, what if he’s furious?” Warren said, frowning. “He chose you as favored concubine.”

“Warren, he doesn’t know that I can communicate with you. How would we explain this?” I asked him.
“We tell the truth.”
I let that settle between us for a moment before I let out a breath.
“We should head back to the rooms,” I tell him. “I’m exhausted, and you should sleep too. Give Leopold control back for the night.”
“I’m hungry,” Warren said, taking hold of my hand. “Let’s get something to eat in the kitchen.”
“We can’t-“I tried to say, but he was already pulling me along with him. My heart hammered against my chest. “Warren..”
We reached the kitchen, which was thankfully empty. Warren kept his hold on my hand as he led me around the center island and towards the large fridge. He released my hand so he could open the fridge and rummage inside.
“This is a bad idea,” I said from behind him, looking over my shoulder, worried that someone might walk in.
He didn’t reply. Instead, he let out an excited gasp as he pulled apple pie out of the fridge and turned to face me.
“My favorite,” he said, setting the pie on the counter.
I sighed, knowing there was no getting through to him. Instead, I rummaged through the cabinets until I found a couple of ›lates and a few pieces of silverware. I brought them over to the counter. He was already taking a knife and slicing through the crispy crust, and I had to admit, it did look good.
He put a slice of pie on my plate and then another on his. I handed him my fork, and he smiled down at me.
‘I’m glad we get to do this,” he said, taking a bite of the pie and groaning with satisfaction.
I took a bite too, the flavors bursting in my mouth. It was delicious.
“We can’t do this all the time,” I warned him, not for the first time. “Leopold can’t find out.”
We continued to eat until footsteps were heard just outside the kitchen door, making my heart stop in my chest. I looked up at Warren, who was also looking at the door.
“Someone’s coming,” I said in a whisper. He turned towards the pie and wrapped the rest, placing it back in the fridge while I hurried to clean up our mess on the counter. We both knew we didn’t have enough time to clean up the entire mess, because whoever was coming through the kitchen doors would be there at any moment.
