Chapter 46
Cecilia’s POV
The silence was louder than any words could have been said. I could feel everyone’s heavy stares on my face, and I was sure my face was flushed pink.
“Vivian, I thought you were going to be his favored concubine,” one of the girls said, her voice coming out barely above a whisper.
“There has to be some kind of mistake,” Vivian said. “I am going to be his favored concubine. He would never choose an Omega.”
“There’s been no mistake,” Landon said, his eyes fixed on Vivian. “His Majesty told me himself that his favored concubine will be named Cecilia. That was the announcement I was about to make.”
Whispers went around the courtyard.
“Going forward, Cecilia will have superiority,” Landon continued, making them suck in sharp breaths. “Anyone who makes trouble for her will either have to deal with the wrath of our King, or be banned with no pay.”
He didn’t wait for them to protest; he turned on his heel and walked away. I stared after him, almost dumbfounded by the announcement. Was I given superiority over these women? That wasn’t really something I was looking for, nor one I wanted. But I suppose that bought my safety for the time being, so I would take it.
“I know what you’re doing,” Vivian said through her teeth. “I can see right through you. But you’ll soon understand how things work around here.”
Without another word, she turned and started to storm away with the others trailing after her.
“I’m starting to,” I say in response, though I wasn’t sure if she heard me.
I spent the rest of the afternoon with Claira, Jasmine, and Cora, I half expected Leopold to appear at any moment and order me to stand beside him while he made his rounds or something, so I was surprised we hadn’t seen him for the rest of the day.
When I saw Landon later that evening, I stopped him before he could get any further from me.
“I’m not entirely sure what I’m supposed to do now that I have this new role. Should I see if the King needs help with anything?” I asked, sounding just as unsure of myself as I felt.
“The King is very busy, I’m afraid. You aren’t needed this evening. Once he requires your assistance, I’ll be sure to come find you,” Landon told me, his eyes on mine.
I felt my cheeks warm, and I bit my lower lip, nibbling on it for a moment.
“Alright,” I tell him as I back away. “I suppose I’ll retire early then. I’ll be in my room.”
Landon bowed his head slightly in my direction, and I turned and hurried to my room without another word. I froze when Anna appeared at the doorway, a smile gracing her lips.
“Oh, hello, Cecilia. I was cleaning your room and doing some of your laundry. I hope you don’t mind the intrusion,” she said as stepped around her and into my room.
I left it pretty clean earlier this morning, so I wasn’t entirely sure what she was cleaning, and I didn’t have much laundry for her to do.
“I’d prefer it if you didn’t just walk into my room,” I tell her, turning to look at her. “I appreciate your efforts, but I truly do cherish my privacy.”
“Of course, I’m so sorry,” she said, bowing her head deeply. “I’ve overstepped. It won’t happen again. You have my word. I hope you have a good night.”

She hurried out the door, shutting the door behind het, and I let out a breath, shaking my head in response.
I didn’t bother taking a bath this evening; I just wanted to get into bed and go to sleep. It was exhausting, having been up for most of the night, and then my confrontation with Vivian earlier today. I was ready to sleep for the next several hours, undisturbed.
I put on my sleep clothes before going into the bathroom to take my hair out of its updo, which I’d kept in for most of the day. My hair fell around my shoulders, and I let out a breath of relief as each of the pins that kept my hair in place fell onto the
counter.
After a few more of my nightly routines, I left the bathroom and got into bed, letting out a breath of relief. I just hoped I’d be able to sleep tonight without thinking about Leopold. However, I knew before even closing my eyes that it was going to be a losing battle.
