Chapter 44

Cecilia’s POV

“What exactly does your favored concubine have to do?” My chest is tightening.

Would he force me to have sex with him? The thought made me feel ill, and I had to take a steady breath to calm my nerves. Exactly what I just said. You need to stay near me… sleep in my bed when I require it. Not to mention attend events and dinners as my date,” he said, speaking the words almost like they pained him. “This isn’t easy for me to ask…”

“Are you asking?” I asked without thinking. “Or are you demanding this of me?”

“I am asking,” he said, and the certainty in his tone surprised me. “I already told you what you’ll get out of this. A larger payout. Isn’t that what you want? Isn’t that what any of them ever wants?”

He was wrong… I didn’t really care about the money. I knew money would be helpful for my future. I wanted to get out of the Silver Moon Pack and out from under my father’s shadow. His betrayal stung more than anything, and the thought of returning to that life made me feel sick to my stomach.

I cared about my freedom way more than I cared about that money, though.

“You promise me that I will be free after you find your true mate,” I tell him, my eyes meeting his.

That’s all I wanted… I just wanted to hear him say I can return home once he finds his true mate, and that this won’t all be for nothing. A slave with a payout is still enslaved… if he gives me money and then demands that I continue to work at the palace as a slave, that’s not something I can endure, and I won’t agree to it under any circumstances. No matter how much money he gives me… It’s only good if he allows me to leave with the other concubines.

“You have my word that you will be free,” he tells me, certainty in his tone making the tension in my shoulders subside.

I let out a breath I hadn’t known I was holding.

“Thank you,” I say softly.

“So, we have a deal then?”

“Yes,” I answered. “We have a deal.”

“I’ll alert Landon of the details of our new arrangement to save him the time and energy of asking questions,” Leopold said, taking a step away from me. “I’ll come find you later.”

I nodded, watching as he turned and hurried out of the room, shutting the door behind him. I stared at the door, trying to figure out what just happened.

“We have permission to hang with Warren!” Lora said, and I could hear the excitement in her tone.

I couldn’t help but feel that I was way in over my head.

Later in the courtyard, I spotted Claira, Jasmine, and Cora, sitting on stone benches and laughing with one another. They looked so carefree and sure of themselves, unlike some of the other concubines around this palace. It was good to see them, and I felt my chest expanding as I got closer.

Jasmine was the first to see me, and her eyes widened in surprise.

“You’re alive,” she said when I was close enough, making the others turn to look at me as well.

Cora was immiedalty standing on her feet, her mouth covered by her hands.

“Oh, Goddess. We thought for sure the King was going to kill you,” Cora said, rushing towards me, meeting me the rest of the

way.

“You thought I was dead?” I asked, looking at the girls.
