The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 42

Chapter 42

“Okay,” Lora said softly, accepting my answers and reasoning. “We find our own peace.”

After I changed into my sleepwear, I went to the tea Anna had left for me. I stared down at the browning water, the tea bag floating innocently there as steam hovered around it. I wasn’t sure why… but something inside of me told me not to drink it. The fact that she was in my room without being invited inside left a nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I went to bed instead and slipped beneath the covers, hoping that I’d be able to sleep now that I was bathed and redressed.

“Lora…” I said, my voice breaking through the silence that stretched between us. “Why is it that we can hear Warren and nobody else can?”

It was a question I thought of many times, but I could never find an answer: Lora was quiet for a moment, and I could sense that she was thinking intensely about it.

“I’m not sure,” she finally said. “But I enjoy his company.”

Yeah… so was I. And that was beginning to become a problem.

Leopold’s POV

I woke up alone in bed, though the scent of Cecilia lingered. I knew she had to be in this room at some point last night. I wish I could remember all that had happened, but once Warren took control, I was no longer with him.

I remember seeing that girl in my room; she was uninvited, there when I returned for the evening. She wore a red dress… that damn dress.

It brought back a painful memory that I would prefer never to remember. I sensed my wolf’s anger before he took control, but I knew in a heartbeat that he was going to kill her, and there was nothing I was going to be able to do about it.

Landon was usually good at cleaning up the mess, so I wasn’t surprised when I saw no traces of blood in the room or on me. But what I couldn’t fire out was why I couldn’t smell the lingering scent of blood and why Cecilia’s scent was so potent.

She shouldn’t have been here last night. If she were… there’s no doubt that my wolf would have killed her.

A knock on the door drew my attention away from last night and into the present moment. I got out of bed, running my fingers through my hair as I stretched my aching bones. I walked out the door and pulled it open, revealing Landon on the other side.

“You’re awake,” Landon said, looking me over. “You’ve had quite a night, Your Majesty.”

I let out a breath and stepped aside as he walked into my room. He held a platter of coffee and biscuits, along with a little cup of jam.

“Nice job getting rid of the evidence, Landon. I’m glad I have you to assist me,” I said as I went over the small table Landon was setting my coffee on.

“I didn’t have to clean up anything this time. Nobody died,” Landon said from over his shoulder, making me furrow my brows.

“What?” I asked, not sure I heard him correctly.

He turned to look at me, his eyes fixed on mine.

“Nobody died. Cecilia was here to calm your wolf. I told you… There’s something special about her that keeps him under control. Do you believe me now?”

I just stared at him; it wasn’t like Landon to make things like that up. I knew he was telling the truth, though my mind wasn’t ready to believe it.
