e tunnel was cool and surprisingly well-kept, illuminated by small, exchanged lanterns that glowed with a soft silver light. We walked side by side through the winding passage.

Every few steps, Lucy would point out another hidden lever or concealed doorway.

“That one leads to Father’s study,” she told me. “He has no idea of its existence. We’ve played some hilarious pranks on him over the years.”

She laughed as we continued onward.

“That one goes in behind the ballroom,” she said, pointing at another one.

“What about that one?” I pointed to a narrow passage that led into darkness, and she shuddered at the sight.

“We don’t go into that one,” she said as she continued to move forward.

“Why not?”

“Let’s just say, I might have released several chickens into Cedrik’s bedroom, and now I am banned from the coop.”

I burst out laughing.

“You did what?” I asked between giggles. “Who is Cedrik?”

She laughed as well.

“My overachiever brother,” she said, rolling her eyes. “He’s mated and has his perfect little family in the northern territory. Head commander of the royal gammas.”

“Do you have a good relationship with your brother?”

“We have a fine relationship. He’s a couple years younger than me and already living a better life than I am. Neither of us wanted to take over for our parents, but because I’m the oldest, the responsibility was placed on me.”

She stopped outside of the doorway, and she smiled.

“We are here,” she told me over her shoulder as she pressed her hands against the wooden doorway.

At that point, I realized there was no handle, and I wondered for a moment how she was going to open it. But then he stared to slide it, and I realized it wasn’t a doorway at all. It was a shelf of some sort. 1

She motioned for me to follow her once there was enough space, and once we walked through, I noticed that we were in a supply closet.

“Where are we?” I asked in a whisper, feeling like I couldn’t speak too loudly or we would be caught.

“You’ll see,” she said with a grin.

She took my arm and pulled me along with her until we reached an actual doorway. Once we were inside the brightly lit corridor, she started to run towards another door that I knew from the window led outside.

I followed behind her as we stepped onto a stone walkway. The cool breeze filled my lungs, and I felt like I could finally breathe.

My mouth nearly fell open for the second time today when I saw the gorgeous little village that sat in front of us.

“This is our sanctuary,” she told me, fuotioning to the village. “Or in other words, our pack. It’s the largest in the Kingdom… and the busiest.”

She looped her arm with mine.

“There’s so much I want to show you,” she breathed, and just as we started to take a step towards the village, voice stopped us.

“Why am I not surprised to see you here?”

Turning slowly, we found Mariah standing behind us, her arms folded across her chest.

“Seriously, Lucy? What part of ‘she needs rest’ did you not understand?”

Lucy frowned.

“She looked like she was getting cabin fever. I just wanted to take her out for some fresh air,” Lucy said, lifting her shoulders. “I’m the princess; I should be able to do whatever I want.”

“You know it doesn’t work like that, and you’re only going to put her in danger. You know she shouldn’t be seen by others. At least not until we know where she came from.”

“She’s not a rogue, Mariah. I would be able to detect it if she was,” Lucy argued.

“I’m not worried about her being a rogue,” Mariah countered. “Besides…. there’s something you need to know.”
