Chapter 314
eir scent was strong, and I knew they were closing in on me.
“Miss Cecilia!?” I heard a voice coming from a distance.
More gammas.
My eyes went dark, and my body trembled when I noticed they were even closer to me. They weren’t wearing masks like the others, but they wore the same uniforms. They were not to be trusted… no matter what.
I kept running, darting around them to ensure they didn’t touch me. I heard them shouting my name again. I risked a look over my shoulder to see several armed gammas racing towards me; some looked more worried than others.
I ran even harder.
“Cecilia! Wait!” One of them screamed, their desperate plea making its way to my ears just as the forest suddenly opened and moonlight flooded everything.
For one beautiful second, I thought I had finally escaped. I thought I was free… but then the ground disappeared beneath my feet, and there wasn’t even time to scream.
The cliff edge crumbled.
“No!!!!!”
The earth gave way beneath me; my body pitched forward into empty air.
The last thing I saw was the horrified expression of approaching gammas.
“Cecilia!!!!”
And then I was engulfed in total darkness.
Leopold’s POV
Pain clawed relentlessly at my chest until breathing itself felt impossible. A rage like no other was still surging through my veins, but it was calmer in the sense that I was starting to come back to reality.
The darkness that clouded my vision not too long ago was starting to fade. Only I was no longer in the throne room … I was in the safe room.
I recognized the stone walls, the iron bars, and the silver shackles almost immediately. It was the room I had designed to help protect those around me for when I lost control. Landon knew the drill by now; there was a powerful drug strong enough to put me and Warren under long enough for Landon and some of the gammas to bring me to this room and shackle me.
I usually regain control soon after, so Landon doesn’t typically go far after locking me in here.
“How long have I been out of it this time?” I asked, knowing he was just outside the door.
I didn’t need to look for me to know.
“Almost an hour.”

I winced. It must have taken them a while to drug me and get me into this room.
Has anyone died?”
“A few gammas… and a slave girl who happened to be walking by in that moment,” Landon said, shaking his head.
A headache forced its way into my temple, and I gritted my teeth. I hated this part of waking up after my wolf had. taken control: finding out how many lives I had mistakenly taken.
Since Cecilia arrived at the palace, that hasn’t happened. Warren had been too preoccupied with her to let his temper loose. I had to ask myself, not for the first time, why I thought sending her away would be a good idea.
A bitter feeling I had never felt before spread throughout my chest.
Something was wrong.
