Chapter 281
Cecilia’s POV
I stared at him, confused.
“And how exactly do you think we are going to prove that Sophia is lying?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at him as 1- stood. “She wears your mark. The evidence is clear.”
“Not evidence… deceit,” Warren snapped, his eyes blazing with fury again.
But once again, it wasn’t unstable, and it wasn’t directed at me. I knew I had no real reason to fear him, but I feared what might happen if we couldn’t prove Sophia to be a fraud. Though every instinct inside of me was. telling me that she was.
“How can you be so sure?” I asked him, my voice coming out barely above a whisper.
“A wolf knows his mate,” Warren said with such certainty that I immediately believed him. “Sophia is no mate.”
I swallowed, my cheeks burning from the intensity with which he was staring at me. I had to force myself to look away before I completely melted under his scrutiny. He stepped closer to me, closing the small gap between us.
“Let me help you, Cecilia. And you help me,” he said, his voice low and deep, sending a warmth like no other through my entire body.
Without thought, I nodded slowly, as if compelled by his voice and words to obey him.
“Okay,” I finally managed. “We can help each other.”
He looked relieved, and a smile lit up his face.
“We go now then,” he said, taking hold of my hand. “It’s late evening… your father usually drinks in the palace bar at this hour. Diana will be there as well, keeping up appearances until he makes a fool of himself.”
I raised my brows.
“How do you know this?”
“The palace speaks,” he told me, rolling his eyes. “Servants and gammas all over whisper.”
I let out a breathy laugh as I nodded.
“Of course,” I murmured. “That’s exactly where my father would be.”
Truth be told, I had no idea my father had a drinking problem until recently. He typically poured himself a glass of scotch during dinner… and sometimes he would even enjoy a glass of whisky, depending on the party. But it was always controlled… at least, I thought it was.
Up until the other night, when Diana kicked him out of the guest room. He was staggering around, drunker than I had ever seen him, and I was confused by the sight. Diana didn’t look surprised by it, but she was furious. She told him that he wasn’t allowed back in their room until he was sober and clean.
My father didn’t seem like he cared one way or another.
I had never been to the palace bar; it was on the other side of the main dining hall and near the kitchen. I heard noise and music coming from the bar on occasion in passing, but I never dared to walk in and see what the fuss was about.
