Chapter 275
Leopold’s POV
“Sire, what is it?” Landon asked as he followed me out of the hospital unit.
The pain in my temple was explosive; images of my past kept flashing in my mind. The sound of crying; my mother begging. It was a memory I wasn’t sure was real or a figment of my imagination.
But something triggered it; the sounds of Sophia sobbing.
The memory of my mother sobbing and begging for her life slammed into my brain like a silver bullet, nearly knocking me off my feet. The fear I felt as a young child when I saw my mother for the last time the smell of irises and the color red.
Pieces of a singular memory, a hidden past, were wedging their way through my mind, and yet there was something even more powerful trying to suppress it and prevent it from being fully resurfaced.
That small act was causing a world of pain, making my knees buckle.
“Sire,” Landon said again, his hand resting on the back of my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze to ground me. Talk to me. What happened? Is all well with Lady Sophia?”
Her name was enough to draw my attention; the anger and resentment I felt towards her came rushing back. There was no way Cecilia would have tried to hurt Sophia. I wasn’t an idiot; something else transpired, and I needed to find out what the fuck it was before I lost my mind.
The only issue was that there were witnesses who claimed they saw Cecilia stabbing her; and then, of course, Sophia’s accusations were made public. If I didn’t do something about it soon, there would be a target on Cecilia’s back, and I couldn’t let that happen.
I hated the look on her face when I told them to take her to the dungeons, and even more so the look on her face when I demanded she apologize to Sophia. It was enough that I couldn’t even look at her directly.
She was angry and hurt, and she had every right to be.
I couldn’t sleep last night knowing she was rotting in the dungeons with rogues. I wanted to go down there and take her away from here, where nobody could ever touch her, but I knew that would make me look like a weak King; choosing my concubine over my mate.
It was frowned upon; it was against the Goddess’s will, and if I were to go against her will, it would make the Kingdom lose their respect for me.
I just needed to buy us some time, and if that meant making Cecilia apologize so Sophia would drop the issue, then so be it.
“Are you going to speak?” Landon asked when I hadn’t said anything, his eyes narrowed. “You ran out of the hospital so fast that I was barely able to catch up. What happened in there?”
I let out a breath as I turned to him; my eyes were most likely red with anger, but it wasn’t directed at Landon, and he knew this. He raised his brows, folding his arms across his chest like he was about to scold me, though he knew better than to do that right now. So, instead, he just stared at me silently.
“Well?” He urged me when I hadn’t said anything.
“I need to find out what happened last night,” I told him, my voice gruff. “There has to be proof… or something that proves her innocence.”
