Chapter 268
first instinct was to deny her accusation, but she knew I was in the forest with Leopold… or rather, Warren. Which meant someone had truly seen us together; lying about it might make the situation worse.
“Sophia, I’m not in the mood for this,” I tell her as I started to turn away, but she grabbed my arm, halting me.
“You are a filthy slut,” she hissed, her eyes red with fury. “You hooked up with my mate… my fiancé How dare you act like you’re on a high horse right now.”
I frowned at her.
“If he truly were your mate, then he wouldn’t have hooked up with another woman,” I told her coldly. “Perhaps you should question why he felt the need to look elsewhere.”
It was a low blow, but I truly wasn’t in the mood.
“You bitch,” she hissed. “You’re just jealous. You’ve always been jealous. You’re jealous I stole your father from you, and you’re jealous I stole the King. But news flash, Cecilia. Not everything is about you! You’re nothing but a whore just like your filthy mother.”
The mention of my mother was like a slap in the face. I narrowed my eyes at her and stepped into her space.
“Don’t you dare speak of my mother,” I said, my voice low and serious. “You knew nothing of her and what she’s been through leading up to her death. Maybe you should start worrying more about where your mate is and leave me alone, Sophia.”
I turned to walk away, not wanting to continue this conversation any further, but her nails dug into my arm where she still clutched me.
I whipped around to face her, trying to tug free.
“Let me go, Sophia,” I said through my teeth.
The corner of her lips curved as she pulled something out of her dress; I froze when I saw a small dagger in her hands. My heart lurched at the sight; I wasn’t sure how she got it, but her intent was clear.
“Sophia,” I said, my eyes never leaving the silver blade. “Put that away. Are you crazy?”
She let out a bitter laugh.
“I might be,” she said. “But at least I know where I stand in the eyes of the King. I’m his mate… the one he’s going to marry. You’re just his whore he enjoys toying with.”
“Killing me isn’t going to do anything other than make him hate you,” I said, my eyes narrowing. “Is that really something you’re willing to risk?”
She let out another laugh and shook her head.
“Oh, Cecilia, you crack me up. I’m not planning on killing you with this dagger,” she tells me, her grin widening. ” I’m about to see who the King truly believes, who he truly chooses, because I guarantee it won’t be his slut of a concubine.”
“What?” I asked, my eyes widening slightly. “What are you talking about, Sophia? Why are you doing this? We used to be friends and-”
She laughed again, cutting me off and letting whatever words I had left die in my throat.
