I tensed when a figure emerged from the tree line; for a moment, I thought Warren had given Leopold control back, and it was him that I was facing. He was barefoot with only a pair of dark jeans on; his biceps still had a bit of blood on them, but not as much as Warren’s fur.

His hair was a mess from the fight, and his breathing was still a bit ragged.

When I looked into his eyes, I saw the golden hue, indicating that it was Warren and not Leopold standing in front of me. I’m not sure why that didn’t make me feel any better when a week ago it would have.

“Foolish for coming here,” he said, his voice still sounding like a growl, the bite in his tone making me flinch slightly. “Could have gotten killed.”

“I didn’t know rogues came this close to the palace gates,” I admitted, wrapping my arms around myself.

That was only partly the truth; the whole truth was that I didn’t think a rogue would be able to take me by surprise. But I underestimated them around this area and for that…I truly was foolish.

What would I have done if Warren didn’t appear?

I put myself and my unborn baby in trouble… that can’t happen again.

I was so relieved by the sudden rescue that tears started to fill my eyes.

“Rogues always around,” Warren said roughly, his eyes searching mine for what felt like an eternity. “Never safe,”

I looked away from him, the heat of his gaze almost too much to handle.

“You’re right,” I told him, my voice softer than I meant it. “I was being foolish.”

I turned to look at him, my gaze burning into his.

“Thank you, Warren. I don’t deserve your kindness.”

He pressed his lips together, then he took long strides to approach me, eating up the distance between us quickly. I stepped back, taken aback by the sudden proximity. I continued to back up until my back was pressed against a tree and Warren was only inches from me, his hand resting along the edge of the tree, just above my head, his gaze piercing and stormy as he looked into my eyes.

He was so close to me that I felt the warmth of his breath fanning against my lips. I hated the slight tremble in my body from how close he was; I hated that the mere presence of him drew me in.

I truly hated how Lora would barely speak to me or surface when I called her, but the moment Warren and Leopold were around, she was right there.

The control he had over her… the control he had over me… it wasn’t normal.

“Warren-”

“You told me that you didn’t care for me,” he told me, his tone clipped and deep, making my heart skip a beat.” Then why did your breathing change?”

His voice deepened even more, his eyes shifting to my lips.

“And why do you tremble when I touch you?” He asked, his voice now dropping below a whisper.

moved his other hand, the one not pressed against the tree, down the side of my body, and like it was proving his point, I trembled from the electric feeling of him. My breath hitched when I felt his strong fingers digging into the side of my waist, and then I felt his pressing against me, hard and ready.

My pulse fluttered beneath him, and yet, I couldn’t bring myself to look away.

This hold he had on me was alluring, and I needed to snap out of it before I fell into the hole too deep.

“Your mate,” I reminded him, my voice coming out breathier than I meant it. “Sophia is waiting for you.”
