Chapter 224
Cecilia’s POV
Jax ate the steak like he truly did like it rare- who knows… maybe he did, and it wasn’t a lie to save me. Regardless, I was grateful to him for that. I began to eat as well and nearly moaned at the delicious taste that exploded in my mouth. The palace chefs were truly remarkable, and I don’t think I would ever get used to this level of food.
It was even better in the King’s private dining hall; they truly did live up to their reputation.
“Truly, Cecilia,” Diana said, her lip curling in disgust as she glared at me. “You truly should adopt a bit more class. You should take notes from Sophia.”
I blinked at her, realizing that they were staring at me.
I glanced at Sophia, who bit her bottom lip.
“Oh, mother. You’re always picking on Cecilia, and that’s not fair. It’s not her fault she has no class… she’s an orphan after all.”
My cheeks burned at her words; she was talking through her ass now.
“An orphan?” Leopold asked, raising his brows.
“You didn’t know?” Sophia asked, raising her gaze to meet his. “Cecilia was found in the forest by my father. He took her in when she was only a baby. Her mother died from some terrible disease she got from having sex with too many men.”
I slammed my fork down, jolting the table and startling those around me, including Leopold.
“Don’t you dare speak of my mother,” I said through my teeth, my eyes narrowed at Sophia.
“I’m so sorry… I didn’t mean any disrespect. I’m sure she was a fine woman… I mean… most men seemed like her,” Sophia continued, trying to act apologetic.
“You know that’s a lie, Sophia. My mother never spread her legs for any man,” I told her through my teeth.
“How would you know? You’ve never even met her. Do you even remember the first thing about your mother?” Diana asked, folding her arms across her chest. “I’m the only mother figure you’ve ever had.”
I pressed my lips together.
“That’s enough,” Leopold said coldly. “Perhaps we should change the subject.”
“I didn’t mean to start trouble,” Sophia said, her bottom lip trembling. “I’m so sorry if I’ve upset you, Cecilia.”
I decided not to pick this battle. She was only trying to get a rise out of me, and I wasn’t going to let it work. I picked up my fork and knife and started to cut into the steak.
“Don’t forget to eat your veggies,” my father said, pointing at the greens on my plate. “You’ve always had a habit of skipping them if I remember correctly.”
“You’re right,” Diana said, her eyes finding my plate as well. “And it’s certainly starting to show on your hips. I didn’t want to say anything, but you’ve truly let yourself go since I last saw you, Cecilia. Amazingly, the King chose you to be his favored concubine when he could have had any other beautiful woman in this palace.”
“Mother, you’ve gone too far now. You’re being rude to His Majesty’s favored concubine, and it must end now,”

Sophia said, though her eyes sparkled with amusement.
apologize, Your Majesty,” Diana said as she continued to eat her food. “I forget that Cecilia is under your protection now that she’s been named your favored concubine. To us… She’s still just Cecilia.”
