Chapter 27

Cecilia’s POV

I had to do something. It was now or never. Now, or Warren was going to kill Vivian.

I didn’t have a lot of time to think so I did the first thing that came to mind. Vivian was right next to tue. So I pretend to trip and lose my balance.

I fell into Vivian, knocking her to the side, away from Leopold and the table. We both toppled down to the ground. The plate holding the pastries smashed into the ground, breaking into a hundred tiny sharp pieces that clattered out, scattering.

Snickers and whispers mumbled through the room. One particularly loud concubine said, That Ornega is so clumsy. What a disgrace.

Another added, And falling into Vivian! Doesn’t she know who Vivian is? I’m afraid even to talk to her!

A third chimed in, An Omega knocking over one of the highest ranking concubines? It will be a miracle if she lives through the night.

In my mind, I heard Warren laugh. She fell down. Good show!

While I didn’t revel in being part of what he was laughing at, I was relieved to hear his voice so much calmer. With a sigh of relief, I knew the danger he posed had passed.

I started to stand up, but Vivian moved faster. She pressed her hand to my shoulder and used me to push herself upright. She shoved me harder than was necessary, and my hands skittered across the ground from the force.

My palms slid straight into the pile of broken porcelain, with some slicing into my hand.

What do you think you are doing, you clumsy thing?!Vivian demanded of me.

I’m sorry,I said quickly. I was still on the floor, on my knees now, looking up at her. My hands were bleeding. I held them near my waist. I was suddenly dizzy. I didn’t mean to bump into you. It was an accident.

Like the hells it was an accident,Vivian snapped. She gestured for some of the guards stationed around the big room to come closer. Arrest this vile thing at once. Throw her in the dungeon and beat her. She should be punished for intentionally attacking me.

I hate noisy women,Leopold said suddenly, his ice cold voice cutting in

Vivian froze. Everyone did. The guards stayed right where they were.

Leopold looked over at Vivian. Get out.

Me?she asked with disbelief. You can’t mean me.She pointed at me. She’s the one who pushed me! I shouldn’t be punished! She cast me a venomous glare. She should be the one to be made to leave!

She wasn’t the only one who was shocked. A hush fell across the room, and then the murmuring began.

What’s this? The Alpha King would protect a newlyarrived Omega slave over Vivian?

An Omega over one of the most favored concubines? How can this be?

Leopold didn’t say a word. He didn’t even have to gesture. All he did was glance at the guards and they came over.

I braced myself, expecting to feel their rough grips on my arm. Instead, the grabbed Vivian and pulled her away.

My King, you can’t mean this! My King!

The entire room watched her leave, their faces a mixture of surprise and horror. All except Leopold.

Leopold turned back to his meal, entirely unaffected by her screams as she was dragged from the room.

When the doors closed behind her, a silence swept over the hall.

Leopold finished chewing his current bite of food, then he spoke, loud and confidently, like nothing had happened at all.

The mating ceremony has been scheduled and will take place in two months. Per tradition, all single young women from various packs, excluding Omegas, will be invited. As royal concubines, you are also available to participate. An official participant list will be available in two days. By the end of the ceremony, I will have chosen my Queen.

He looked down and continued eating. With his announcement done, the silence disappeared in the room as the concubines began speaking quickly with one another, their voices loud with excitement.

What if he chooses me?

I’m certain he will choose me!

The palace maids looked on with envy.
