Cecilia’s POV

“Don’t worry, Cecilia,” Madam sa said as she stood, tightening her cloak around her shoulders. “Your secret is safe with me. But word of advice… don’t wait too long before telling the King how you feel. His response might surprise you.”

She didn’t let me respond before she walked away. My heart was in my throat, and my wind was wandering in all different directions, but I didn’t stop her. Nor was I going to take her advice… it didn’t matter how I felt. At the end of the day, we both had our own mates, and our relationship was nothing more than surface-level. 1

I stood, brushing the imaginary dirt off the skirt of my dress before heading back to my room. I needed to get some sleep if I wanted to figure out how to clear my mind and get out of the trouble Sophia had gotten me into.

Madam Isa left before sunrise.

I watched her carriage disappear through the gates from my bedroom window, my arms wrapped tightly around myself as unease settled heavily in my chest.

It hadn’t even been a few minutes, and the palace already felt different without her. It was quieter… colder. And somehow… lonelier.

Her words lingered in my mind long after she left; she knew that I was an Alpha, and she also knew that I had harbored deep feelings for King Leopold. I suppose I wasn’t that subtle, and it made me wonder if everyone around me noticed as well. If she knew I wasn’t an Omega… did others?

I quickly brushed that thought out of my head; of course, nobody else thought I was more than an Omega. If they had… they wouldn’t treat me as if I were nothing more than dirt beneath their shoes.

I spent months hiding who I truly was, carefully lowering my scent and behavior until pretending became second nature. Most saw exactly what I wanted them to see; it was easier this way. Easier than explaining that my father betrayed me and chose Sophia over me. Even if I did come clean, nobody would believe me.

They already think I’m a monster who would shove the King’s mate after she supposedly showed me kindness. The last thing I needed was for them to think I was a pathological liar as well.

I put on my sleep attire, braided my hair down my back, and tucked myself into bed. I was exhausted, though I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep this evening. I had way too much on my mind to sleep.

I mostly spent the night staring at the ceiling, counting all the imperfections that my eyes could spot. I paid close attention to the water stain on the far side of the room, wondering about its origin.

By the time the sun had risen, my eyes felt dry, and my body was stiff. I slowly got out of bed, stretching and cracking my aching bones and taking a deep breath. I got out of bed, slipped beneath the sheets, and padded into the bathroom.

I groaned when I saw my reflection. I looked as bad as I felt. My eyes had dark circles beneath them, and my cheeks were pale… lifeless even.

My hair was a mess despite my carefully structured braid.

I slowly undid the braid, letting my hair fall in waves around my shoulders before tripping out of my sleep clothes and filling the basin with hot water. The bathroom immediately filled with steam, and I could feel relaxed before I even got into the water.

Once I was in the water, I felt a thousand times better… though I was still tired. I almost fell asleep in the bath, but I kept myself

awake.

I cleaned myself and washed my hair, then drained the basin and stepped out, wrapping a white towel around myself to dry off. Once I was finished in the bathroom, I walked back into the bedroom and picked out a casual dress from the closet.

It was one I had worn before; comfortable and simple. I put it on, feeling as though I was dressing for a performance. I never
