“Don’t make the say it again, he muttered. “I was wrong to involve you last night. To barge into your room and demand that you help me.”

I was stunned.

Was King Leopold actually apologizing to me for something?

I never thought I would live to see the day.

“You didn’t have to bring me all the way here just to apologize, Your Majesty,” I tell him, trying to remain professional and closed off. I couldn’t let him see the deepest parts of me anymore… I had to close that chapter between us, or else it would just end in more pain. “But I appreciate it.”

I started to leave, but he stopped me.

“Vivian was in charge of the planning committee,” he tells me. “Now that she is no longer with us, they’ll need someone new in charge,” he continues, and I could feel his eyes on the back of my head.

I turned back to him and nodded slowly.

“I suppose you are right,” I tell him, unsure of what’re he was going with this.

He let out a breath.

“Perhaps that could be something you can do,” he tells me. “It’ll keep you busy while I continue to search for my mate.”

“You want to keep me busy?”

“It would be easier that way… don’t you think?” He asked, his eyes narrowing.

The thought of taking over the planning committee made my chest feel tight, but perhaps he was right. Maybe this was the distraction I needed.

“It would be an honor,” I tell him, dipping my head slightly at him.

He frowned at the gesture, but I didn’t stick around long enough for him to make my comments. I slipped out of the study.

Later in the evening, I met with the planning committee in the concubine lounge. Most of them were shocked to see me, but when Landon announced that I would be taking over for Vivian, they all started to ramble off their ideas that Vivian had effectively shut down.

Leopold hadn’t made any official announcements yet, but Landon let it slip that there would be a redo of the consort selection ceremony in only a few days and that we should be prepared.

The thought of having to do all of this again made me feel ill, but who was I to argue? Plus, as Leopold said, this will keep my mind busy, and I Goddess knew I needed to keep my mind busy considering my own mate was somewhere around this palace, and I couldn’t sense him.

I hadn’t slept in my room this evening; instead, I slept in Cora’s room. She didn’t ask questions, and I didn’t provide any answers other than that I didn’t want to sleep alone out of fear that what happened with Vivien could happen again. That was all the explanation she needed to welcome me into her room with open arms.

I knew that if I slept with someone else in their room, Warren would leave me alone. I’ve been avoiding him these last few days, even before I found out he was the one who killed Vivien.

I wasn’t even sure how to truly face him lately.

He had become one of my very best friends in such a short time, and now it felt like I couldn’t even talk to him. That kiss truly made things complicated between us, and now that I knew with certainty that my mate was in his palace and that Leopold had

found his mate as well… it trade more sense to cut ties with Warren altogether.

However, sometimes in the night, I could hear his distress call, and it pulled something inside of me to want to go to him. Lora hated how upset he sounded, and she wanted to make things better… but it was no longer up to us to make things better for

Warren.

He needed to figure things out without us because soon enough… I would be leaving this palace, and Leopold would be nothing

more than a memory.

“You’ve been avoiding me,” Leopold said as I entered my bedroom late into the night.

I froze at the doorway when I saw his eyes staring back at me, and my heart squeezed painfully in my chest.

“I haven’t-”
