I let out a breath and reached up to touch the mark on my neck. I was so sure that Leopold would see the mark and ask about it, but when he didn’t, I felt confused. It made me want to look at it again, so I stood to my feet and went towards the bathroom

across the room.

I pushed the door open and then closed it behind me as I went towards the mirror. I brushed the strands of hair away from my neck to take a look at the mark and then my breath caught in my throat.

“Gone…” Lora breathed, also amazed.

There was nothing but smooth skin where the mark once was. That’s something that I have never heard of before.

I checked the other side of my neck, just in case I’d misremembered the placement, but no… the mark was completely gone.

“How is that possible?” I whispered, my brows knitting together.

It was no wonder Leopold hadn’t seen it… There was nothing for him to see.

“Vanishing mark,” Lora replied. “Unheard of…”

“It happened, though, right? I didn’t just imagine it. We were marked earlier this evening…”

“Yes,” Lora assured me. “It happened.”

I took a step away from the mirror and went back into the bedroom, pacing the floor until I was sure a hole would burn through the ground. I was restless, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to get any sleep tonight until I knew with certainty what had happened and who I was with in the gardens.

Against my better judgment, I left my room and went straight towards the garden area. I knew it probably wasn’t a good idea to be caught there at this time of night, especially after what had already happened there. But if someone marked me… maybe he was still there… or at least maybe his scent.

As I reached the gardens, all I could smell was the flowers and shrubbery that surrounded me. I didn’t get the same sense I had earlier, and I almost felt foolish for being here right now.

“Cecilia?” I heard my name from behind me, and I spun around to face Jax, my eyes wide with fright.

“Jax…” I breathed, pressing my hand to my chest. “You frightened me.”

“My apologies. But you shouldn’t be out here at this hour,” he told me, his brows pinching together. “Is everything alright?”

I blinked a few times, trying to gather my thoughts. I couldn’t tell Jax the truth… but then again… perhaps he was the one who marked me last night.

My stomach tightened at the thought.

“Not him.” Lora murmured. “Not mate.”

I let out a breath, relieved to hear that.

“Yeah, sorry,” I said, clearing my throat “I couldn’t sleep, so I thought a walk in the gardens might help.”

He raised his brows.

“The King had ordered that all concubines remain in their rooms for the night and that nobody was to leave the palace walls,” Jax told me, stepping closer. “I’ve heard he’s in search of his mate and he’s gone mad over it.”

My cheeks burned, and I couldn’t seem to look Jax in the eyes.

“Yeah…. I’ve heard the same thing,” I tell him. “That’s why he canceled the ceremony.”

Jax nodded.

“I assumed that was the reason. Let me escort you back to your room,” he said, offering me his arm.

I took it because I wasn’t sure what else to do.

“You were right about Anna by the way. She tried to poison me,” I tell him; I didn’t explain to him why she tried poisoning me, though. I didn’t think it was right of me to tell him Anna’s story, even if she did try to kill me.

He tensed at my words and stopped to stare at me, his eyes wide.

“Are you alright?”

I nodded, sucking my bottom lip into my mouth as I thought about how to answer that weighted question.

“I’ll be okay,” I tell him. “She’s been taken into custody and will be punished accordingly. She’s being tried as a traitor of the palace.”

He nodded slowly.
