Chapter 180
I didn’t stop to answer the questions of nobles or Alphas.. I just continued down the corridor until I reached the grand staircase.
I took the stairs two at a time; Landon kept up with me, apologizing to those I had bumped into on my behalf. I was too wound up to stop, and my only mission was to see Cecilia and the mark I was so sure I left on her.
I started towards her room only to pause, remembering that she had to switch rooms. It was on the other end of this wing. I internally cursed myself for sending her to a room so far away from mine, but it didn’t matter now because the moment I saw that mark on her neck, I was going to move her right into my bedroom.
I finally reached her door, and without a second thought, I went to open it, only to find that it’s locked.
Of course, it was locked. What was I expecting? That she would sleep in her room with it being wide open? Especially after what happened that evening.
“Sire, I wouldn’t do anything too rash,” Landon tried to warn me, but I was way too far gone in my own insanity to hear him
clearly.
I used my foot to burst the door in, watching as the hinges broke apart and the door practically came undone completely.
It jolted Cecilia, who was standing in front of her bed. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes red-rimmed. I wasn’t sure if it was me, she was afraid of… or something else.
I knew what this must look like to her, and I hated the thought of scaring her, but I needed answers, and I needed them right
this second.
But then, my eyes found something else. The bowl of soup was on the ground, and my brows furrowed.
“How did you get a hold of the King when you were standing right in front of me?” Anna, Cecilia’s maid, asked in a broken whisper, her eyes wide and filled with fear.
That was interesting.
“What seems to be going on in here?” Landon asked, stepping beside me, his arms folding across his chest.
“I haven’t told them anything,” Cecilia told Anna, her eyes never leaving mine. “Can I help you with something, Your Majesty?”
“Why is there soup on the ground?” Landon asked, raising his brows.
“She poisoned it,” Cecilia said without missing a beat.
My eyes snapped to the soup again, darkening with rage.
“I didn’t eat any of it,” Cecilia said quickly, probably sensing my wolf’s anger.
Without another thought, I went to Cecilia, closing the distance between us. I cupped her face with my hands; her skin was warm to the touch, and her eyes were wide as they stared into my eyes. I rubbed her cheeks with my thumbs, trying to assess her for any type of damage.
I could hear Landon in the background, jumping into action, taking soup samples, and then I heard a commotion at the door as Anna tried to make a run for it. I wasn’t worried, though I knew she would get caught soon enough, and that soon enough came a lot quicker than I anticipated when Rem appeared at the doorway just before Anna could escape.
Someone must have tipped him off that there were issues here. Either way, I was grateful that he was there.
Cecilia swallowed as she continued to look into my eyes. God… she was so beautiful. I wanted to kiss her. But first, I needed to confirm that she was, in fact, the woman that I marked this evening. I know it was her wearing that blue dress; from her scent alone, I knew it was her.
