Chapter 174

She rolled her eyes at that last part; I knew she was talking about Sophia. But I was shocked that the dress she was wearing was a fake.

“It looks so real,” I murmured, shaking my head. “And the earrings…”

“The earrings are definitely real,” Cora said, raising her brows. “I design jewelry back in my pack, and I know real jewelry vs fake.”

My heart stopped in my chest.

“Also, we still haven’t seen King Leopold,” Claira added, wrapping her arms around herself, her frown deep as well. “Landon was around, though… he looked… concerned.”

“I mean, it makes sense as to why he would be concerned,” Jasmine said. “This is the King’s consort ceremony, and he’s not here. It’s weird.”

“Oh, so this is what you resorted to?” Sophia asked, a smile on her face and a spark of mischief in her eyes as she approached.” Changing into something so… basic?”

“You shouldn’t focus your attention on what I’m wearing, Sophia,” I tell her, folding my arms across my chest. “Besides, shouldn’t you be happy now that I’m unnoticeable?”

She smirked.

“Oh, believe me… You were never noticeable in the first place, Cecilia. There’s no competition here,” she said, and then she turned and started to walk away. “Nice hair by the way.”

And then she was gone,

“Don’t listen to her,” Jasmine said, shaking her head. “Everybody knows that the King is pretty much smitten with you. He wouldn’t make you his favored concubine otherwise.”

“Smitten might be a stretch,” I murmur.

“Hey, what’s going on over there?” Claira asked, pointing across the ballroom.

My eyes shift in the direction she’s pointing, and I raise my brows when I see Landon whispering something to a couple of guards who were listening to him with intent. Soon, they were parting ways, and Landon headed in a different direction.

It didn’t take long for us to figure out what was happening; Landon stepped uppear the throne on the raised platform.

“May I have your attention, everyone?” Landon said. “The King has arrived.”

Whispers erupted around the ballroom; excited chatter.

My stomach knotted; this was it. We were finally going to find out who the King had chosen.

My eyes shifted to Sophia, who was standing with a couple of girls, smoothing the fabric of her dress and trying to look even more presentable. She looked nervous, but excited at the same time.

Not long after, the guards that Landon had just spoken to appeared again, this time with Leopold in the center of them. My first thought upon seeing him was that he looked exhausted.

My heart squeezed in my chest at the sight of him; his hair was ruffled like he had run his fingers through it a couple of times, and his jaw was set. He was wearing formal clothing, though it didn’t look entirely tailored to him; it was almost as if he’d just thrown on whatever random formal wear he could find.

Everyone was silent the moment they spotted him.
